Nourish: A Lone Star Quilt

I am very excited to share my newest quilt with you today. I love this quilt for so many reasons. I named it Nourish because creating it nourished my soul. 

I have loved Lone Star quilts for a long time & knew that one day I'd figure out how to make one without Y seams. Nourish is the result. It comes in 3 sizes (baby, lap, & king) and is made with the Super Sidekick Ruler. You can get the PDF quilt pattern here.

I used Kona Cotton for the lap size cover sample. The background is White and the other fabrics are Dahlia, Splash, Aruba, Key Lime, Canary, Cantaloupe, Candy Pink & Ballerina.

I decided to photograph the quilt in my living room above the couch. I learned a lesson & next time I will steam a quilt before hanging it on my wall!

I created a rainbow stripe pieced back with fabrics that matched the front.

Teresa did a beautiful job with the quilting. I especially love the feathers that frame the star.

I created a baby size Nourish for Nathan & used the same fabrics I have for most of his quilts.

Nathan was all smiles at the start of our photo shoot.

I love this photo so much that I used it on the back cover of the pattern.

Then he decided he was done with photos and just wanted to suck his thumb.

The third Nourish I made features fabrics by Tula Pink. The background is from Pinkerville and the feature fabrics are Tula's Solids and All Star Dots.

I like the play that is created by alternating polka dot prints with solids. 

The background fabric includes all of the colors from the center which creates some fun movement.

I decided to use one of Tula's wide back prints as the backing instead of my usual pieced back. As a result I didn't piece in a label. I decided to include a little woven label before adding my binding.

My model starting giving me the "can I go play now?" face during our photo shoot.

Angela quilted different designs in each color diamond.

Make a block for our wedding quilt!

You are invited to make a block for our wedding quilt.

Lawrence & I made the first two blocks.

About our wedding quilt: A huppah is the canopy a Jewish couple stands under during the wedding ceremony. It can be a sheet, a family heirloom tapestry, or a quilt! It is held up by four poles and it symbolizes the home that we will build together. I am going to make a quilt for our huppah, naturally. It is going to be large and I need 222 small triangle blocks to make it. That's where you come in.
Details 1. Make a triangular block that finishes at 6" tall. (See Template for more info.) You can also use the Creative Grids 60° triangle ruler that is used in my Chopsticks, Varsity & Ballerina quilt patterns to cut a 6 1/2" tall triangle. I took fabrics with me to Sew Down in Portland and came home with some blocks. These are the first 15 blocks:

2. Piece your block using any technique. Please avoid adding embellishments or appliqué.

You can use my HexNMore, Sidekick or Mini HexNMore to create a triangle as shown in these blocks.

You can make a square or rectangle using straight piecing and trim it to the shape of a triangle as shown in these blocks. (Or you can send me the larger piece and I can trim it down.)

You can create a block with improv techniques using straight lines or curves.

The possibilities are endless!!

3. Use any mix of the 20+ Kona Solids shown in the image below. Please do not add any print fabrics or other solids to your block. We want the quilt to have a uniform look.

Our friends over at Pink Chalk Fabrics have graciously agreed to help out all of the sewists who want to participate and don't have the colors on hand to whip up a block. You can find a small, coordinating fabric bundle from the Kona palate we're using in their shop.

4. Sign the back of the block in the seam allowance with your first + last name + the date you made it.

Here are our signatures on the back of the first blocks.

This is the "plan" for the quilt. In the center I'm going to make a medallion. It will be surrounded by a ring of 54 blocks. The final ring then contains 168 blocks.

Hashtags 101

A hashtag is a word or a phrase that begins with the # symbol. They are commonly used throughout Social Media to group & search common items.

For example you can use the hashtag #JaybirdQuilts on Instagram whenever you post a photo of a project you are working on from one of my patterns or rulers. 

Hashtags can also be used on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Flickr & more!

Each of my patterns will now have its own hashtag printed on the back of the pattern.

For example here is the back of my Seaside pattern. You can see that the hashtag is #SeasideQuilt

Capitalization does not matter with hashtags. #JaybirdQuilts is the same as #jaybirdquilts or #JAYBIRDQUILTS and so on.

Each of my new patterns has a bubble of info containing its hashtag now printed on the back of the pattern. As I go back to print with each of my older patterns I'll add the appropriate hashtag as well. At the bottom of this page you'll find a list of all the hashtags for my patterns.

With Instagram you have to put the hashtag in the caption or a comment on your own photo. 

For example: If I write "I love what you did with the #sidekickruler & those fabrics!" on your photo it will not show up in the search of #sidekickruler. The hashtag in my comment will become a link, but it will only show up in the searches if you add it to a comment.

Below you can see the caption I put on this photo. All of the hashtags are blue because they are now links to searches for that hashtag. @annkelle is also blue because it links to her profile.

Tiny Dancer

I'm excited to share a new pattern with you today! Tiny Dancer!!

Tiny Dancer was inspired by Jonah! It's Ballerina's little brother with the addition of 120° Angles edges & so much more. The blocks are the perfect size to use the Hex N More!

Here is the back of the pattern. It features 5 size options. Each Fat Quarter gives you enough fabric for two blocks. If you want added variety in your blocks you can double the number and use Fat Eighths.

  I'm almost finished making Tiny Dancer from Novella by Valori Wells. -- Here are some of the cover shoot outtakes. I liked the texture of this wall... but just couldn't get the right angle.

I took a bunch on these steps... while lots of people looked at me wondering what the heck I was doing.

Detail shot... I LOVE the way the stripes look in these blocks!

This was a cool spot.

I almost used one of the photos from this location... but I just felt like there was something missing.

I knew that ideally I really wanted to shoot in a dance studio. I love how you can see the reflection of the quilt in the wood of this shot.

You can really see the amazing work that Angela did with the quilting in this shot.

I'm lucky that a certain someone has a dance studio on their grad school campus!

I knew right away that this was the spot. A few more adjustments of the quilt & I had the perfect photo!

This one with Aliyah helps you to see the size of the blocks.

I quilted straight lines 3/8" from the block edges in all directions.

You can see a peek at the back in this photo. I backed the quilt with cuddle since it is so soft.

I didn't have a lot of fabric left for the binding so I made a scrappy binding with the fabrics I had left.

One week from today is my 4 year blogiversary!! I'm thinking that to celebrate I'm going to do a giveaway. Would you prefer a bundle of patterns with my Hex N More... or a bundle of fabric?
