Journey to Nebula is Under Way

The Journey to Nebula Skill Builder Sew Along is under way. Over 5,000 sewists are signed up for the Journey to Nebula & our community grows each week. Thank you! We're honored to have you here! This is truly a global sew along experience with many people from many countries.

The Journey to Nebula is a sew along that focuses on using the Hex N More & Super Sidekick (or Sidekick) rulers to help people cut and sew the shapes found in the Nebula Block of the Month Quilt. The goal of the sew along is help people gain confidence using these tools in the months before the Nebula BOM kicks off in January 2021.

Every Tuesday of the sew along we send an email to all participants with the tutorial video of the week, a quick overview of what's covered in the video, our sponsors for the weekly giveaways, and how to enter the giveaways.

I filmed 3 live videos in August to answer questions and get everyone prepared for the sew along. You can watch them all here.

Now the weekly videos are recorded and posted each Tuesday. Think of them as little teaching nuggets of info that I'd be able to give if we were having a class in person together.

Signing up for the email list is the only way to access the 2 exclusive bonus patterns that I'll be sharing with the Journey to Nebula participants for free later in the program. [Sign ups closed November 15, 2020. You can no longer sign up.]

If you've signed up with your favorite quilt shop for the Nebula Block of the Month &/or the Journey to Nebula, you'll still want to sign up here to be on the email list for the tutorials and exclusive bonus patterns.

What if you click the link to sign up & it says that you've already filled it out? Then you're on the email list. You'll want to check all of the inboxes if you have an email set up with multiple inboxes (primary, promotional, updates, spam). Where the emails go is going to depend on how your personal inboxes are set up to receive promotional emails. Double check the spam folder.

The emails are coming from jaybirdquilts@gmail.com. Try adding the address to your contacts so that the emails land in the inbox. Search "jaybirdquilts@gmail.com" in the email search box to see what you can find.

Then be sure to open the emails that you do have from us. There's a chance that email systems will only receive follow up emails if the previous emails have been opened.

Still can't find the emails?
1) If you use multiple email addresses, you may have signed up with one & not the other. Check your other accounts first.

2) There might be a typo in the email address that you submitted to us. Email jaybirdquilts@gmail.com with "J2N Email" in the subject line,  your email address & first and last names in the body of the email. We'll look for you & update our records accordingly.

3) You may have accidentally unsubscribed or your email service has deemed it spam. In this case we'll need an alternative email address to reach you at.

We're posting and sharing your #Journey2Nebula progress on Instagram @Journey2Nebula. Posting to Instagram is optional & not required. If you do post to Instagram we will only be able to see your post if your account is set to public. We can't see posts on private accounts. Yes, if you use the #Journey2Nebula & your account is public we will see the posts. It is not necessary to message with your posts. For those of you who are looking for more info about what all of this #hashtag stuff is about, there's a blog post that I wrote about Hashtags 101 a few years ago to help you out.

We've also got a warm & welcoming community in the private Journey2Nebula Facebook group. You do have to be signed up for the sew along to join the group. It is not a requirement to join the group, follow us on Facebook, or post to Facebook. All social media outlets are an option for those who choose to use them.

Jaybird Quilts is a small team of two people. We're doing what we can to keep up with everyone's emails, posts, comments, and questions. It's a lot to navigate while creating these tutorials, filling product orders for shops, & keeping up with Nate. When you Google it, ask a friend, search for a YouTube tutorial, or help each other out in the Facebook Group, it really mean a lot to us. Thank you for your kindness when you do reach out for help. It goes a long way these days.

You are welcome to make this Journey to Nebula your own. Do what works for you, take the tips & guidance that work for you, and leave the rest. We're glad to have you here, however you choose to participate.

Journey to Nebula: A skill builder series

I’m hosting a sew along! It's called Journey to Nebula. Sign ups for it are now closed, but you can follow along on Instagram at @journey2nebula, and use the #journey2nebula to share your posts with us and be featured in our @journey2nebula stories. Plus! ++ Exclusive bonus content for everyone who signed up.

As the anticipation grows for the arrival of the Nebula Block of the Month quilt, I want to help you use this time to get comfortable with the tools and techniques that you'll put to work making Nebula in 2021. We'll sew together through the end of 2020 with a series of tutorials and patterns to get you all set up for Nebula.

The goal is to help you familiarize yourself with using the Hex N More & Super Sidekick (or Sidekick) rulers, cutting, & piecing shapes from the rulers. We'll work through small, approachable patterns together so that when Nebula hits quilt shops in 2021 you are totally ready to get into it. We'll dedicate two weeks to each skill building pattern.
Other than the cost of the rulers, patterns, and materials, there is no additional cost to participate. Templates are included in all of the patterns and in the Nebula BOM. All of the patterns have full color directions.

The projects that we'll make and when we'll make them are:
Seaside, September 1 to September 14: We'll cut and piece diamonds from the Sidekick or Super Sidekick ruler.

Lucky Charm, September 15 to September 28: We'll cut and piece half hexagons from the Hex N More ruler.

Jawbreaker, September 29 to October 12: We'll work on strip piecing, then cut and piece triangles from the Hex N More, Sidekick, or Super Sidekick ruler.

Rock Candy, October 13 to October 26: We'll cut and piece diamonds and triangles from the Sidekick or Super Sidekick ruler. How the table topper is sewn together will demonstrate a similar approach used to sew together the Nebula quilt top.

Candy Dish, October 27 to November 9: We'll cut and piece hexagons and triangles from the Hex N More ruler.

Gazebo, November 10 to November 23: We'll cut and piece half hexagons and triangles from the Hex N More ruler. How the table topper is sewn together will demonstrate the same approaches used to sew together many of the blocks and the Nebula quilt top.

Exclusive Bonus Patterns
- November 24 to December 7: We'll cut and piece triangles and half triangles with the Sidekick or Super Sidekick ruler.
- December 8 to December 22: We'll cut and piece triangles and diamonds with the Sidekick or Super Sidekick ruler.

These patterns each offer dedicated focus with the rulers, shapes, and any sewing techniques mentioned. All patterns are rotary cut from fabric strips and machine pieced. They are precut friendly, using 5" squares or 2.5" strips, great for breaking into those precut bundles or stash busting.

If you want everything to coordinate with Tula's True Colors that will be featured in Nebula Block of the Month, you'll want to get two 5" charm packs and one design roll of 2.5" strips, that will be enough for the feature fabrics in all of the patterns. 2 yards muslin and 8 yards of a variety of fabrics will cover the background, binding, and backing fabrics for everything.

You'll be all set up with coordinating pillows, table toppers, and a table runner when you add the finished Nebula quilt to your home. Not to mention having the sewing skills and confidence to put the Nebula blocks and pattern together with ease.

Patterns and rulers are available from independent quilt shops. Ask the shop where you've signed up for the Nebula BOM if they'll be offering any Journey to Nebula patterns or packages.
Sign up now to stay up to date with our Journey to Nebula progress, tricks, tips, and exclusive content only available via email to everyone who signs up. Can't wait to sew with you soon!

Post one of the "I'm In" images below to your Instagram account to be in the running for our first giveaway. Giveaways during the course of this program will include fabric, patterns and gift certificates to quilt shops. More details to come.

We hope you'll join us!

Nebula

Nebula is a block of the month quilt made with the Hex N More & Super Sidekick rulers, templates are included in the pattern. It will be available in early 2021 but ask your local quilt shop about ordering it now. This is a collaboration with FreeSpirit Fabrics and it features Tula Pink True Colors fabric line. Shops, reach out to your FreeSpirit rep about ordering Nebula kits & e-mail us if you have any questions.

Sign up here to receive the monthly emails throughout the Nebula sew along.

The Nebula pattern will contain finishing directions for 3 sizes. Most shops will be offering the Queen size. For the Queen size you'll need 8 3/4 yards of 40" wide fabric for backing. Alternatively you can use 3 yards of 108" wide back.

The 18 blocks in Nebula are created using 74 Fat Eighths. The background fabric varies based on which size you are making. Details are below in the next 2 images.

--

The Large Lap uses less background fabric than the Queen. If you sign up for the program you can use the additional fabric to create a scrappy quilt back or for another project.

For the Large Lap size you'll need 7 1/8 yards of 40" wide fabric for backing. Alternatively you can use 2 1/2 yards of 108" wide back.

The King size will require some additional fabric beyond the Queen size. Here are the details so you can plan ahead if this size interests you. Please note this shows the total fabrics needed.

For the King size you'll need 10 yards of 40" wide fabric for backing. Since the quilt is 108" tall it is not ideal to use a 108" wide back.
