Quilts for Nathan

I made LOTS of quilts for Nathan and wanted to document all of them in one place. Below are the photos and stories behind each of the quilts I made for him.

In March 2018 we announced on social media that we were expecting using these BABY letters I made from Alphabet Soup.

I showed the letters in better detail on top of this August Stars quilt.

This August Stars quilt was actually the first quilt I made with our future baby in mind. I started it back in the fall of 2016 when we decided to start trying for a baby.

I had just enough of this very hard to find owl print for 3 columns on the back. I made the rest of the quilt back scrappy with other Hushabye leftovers.

Here is a detail shot of the quilting.

We decided on a boy and a girl name pretty early on. Even though we were waiting till delivery to find out, that didn't stop me from starting to make personalized things. I made 2 pillows, one for the first initial of each of the names. Here is Nate's pillow. (The other one is tucked away for safe keeping.)

I knew I wanted number blocks to use for monthly photos, so I picked some grey remix prints from my stash and started working on them.

I use each tile in a monthly photo with Nathan.

... and then I hang each finished Alphabet Soup tile up on the wall for that month on an Ackfeld Wire frame.

I also made numbers to represent his birthday & finished the banner after he was born.

This is the first quilt I started for the baby after finding out I was pregnant. I was pretty sick the first few months, so I started working on this once I felt better.

I loved the fabrics so much that I even made a few garlands that were used as decor for my baby shower. They are so cute that I haven't taken them down!!

The 4th quilt I made for Nathan in the same fabrics is the cover quilt from my new pattern Ribbon Candy. I was inspired to design this quilt during my pregnancy. I also made tiles that spell out NATHAN and had them hanging up in the hospital. Since I didn't know if I was having a boy or a girl... I actually had 2 sets of name tiles ready to go!

The last quilt I made for Nathan I finished just 2 days before he was born. I had 2 weeks left till my due date and was going a bit stir crazy since everything else was done. Here I am basting the quilt early on Tuesday August 7th. This is one of the last photos of my baby bump!

I really wanted to take the quilt to the hospital with us, but it had just been finished and wasn't washed yet. So like any other crazy person in labor at 3AM... I told my husband to toss it in the washer ASAP. It came out of the dryer just in time for us to leave for the hospital. Here is Nate on the quilt at just one day old.

We also took the quilt to Nathan's newborn photo shoot. Here he is at 5 days old. I can't believe how tiny he was back then!

And here is Nate when he almost 2 weeks old hanging out on the quilt. The super soft flannel makes it a favorite of his!
It's been quite the journey to get here, and I love that quilts have been a part of process the entire way. Thanks for all of your kindness & support through it all!

Ribbon Candy

Introducing my latest pattern, Ribbon Candy!

I had planned on this pattern being announced before my son was born, but he arrived 2 weeks early and only one of the 2 quilts was done! I was inspired to design this quilt during my pregnancy and the three-color quilt matches the nursery. It had been hanging out in there for a week before Nathan was born and inspired the idea for the cover shoot.

I had planned on binding the solid quilt in August, but that day ended up becoming the day that my son was born! Best laid plans they say... It took a few extra weeks since free time with a newborn is basically impossible. After getting it bound I needed to photograph the cover & I recruited some help. My mom took care of Nathan downstairs while my husband and I quickly transformed his nursery into a photo studio!!

It was a tight squeeze to get the photo and we had to move the rocking chair so I could get far enough away from the quilts.

Here I am asking Lawrence to move the quilt a bit.

Doing a photo shoot 3 weeks after my son was born wasn't in my plans, but in the end it worked out! I'm so glad my family is supportive of my quilting endeavors.

Nate wasn't sure what he thought about this quilt at first...

But he has decided it is a keeper!

Scrappy

Teresa's ribbon candy quilting in both versions of the quilt was the inspiration for the name.

Ribbon Candy is made using the Super Sidekick ruler and there's no Y seams. It's made with 2 1/2" strips cut from yardage (to make the 3 Color quilt) or from precuts (to make the Scrappy quilt). The pattern has six quilt sizes: baby, youth, lap, twin, queen, king. The pattern is printed in full color and templates are included.

It's ready to ship to shops now and will be available in local and online quilt shops soon.  Share your photos with us using the hashtag #RibbonCandyQuilt so that we can share in the fun with you.
