Longarm Quilting Workbook by Teresa Silva + a Giveaway!

My friend & one of my favorite quilting collaborators, Teresa Silva of Quilting is My Bliss, has written a new book that's available now, Longarm Quilting Workbook.

I was so excited for Teresa to write her new book that I wrote the foreward for it!

This book features some excellent quilt photography that shows off how the quilting works with the fabric & the block designs to bring the finished quilt together. It is also spiral bound with a lay-flat design, which I love for quilt-related workbooks!

The book features an excellent quilt gallery. Teresa included a lot of my designs. She quilted all of them and they were pieced by either me, Teresa or Leslie Meltzer of 50 Sq Ft Studio.

doll quilt swap

i just got back from taking my doll quilt to the post office...

believe it or not dqs7 was my first doll quilt swap!
i've done lots of other swaps but had a blast with this one.

my swap partner requested a style unlike how i usually work..
but one that i admire..
modern..fresh..new..lots of white.
as in people like
red pepper quilts
film in the fridge
handmade by alissa
oh, fransson!
tallgrass prairie studio
and so on.

i tried a few things..
but nothing seemed to be working out how i wanted.

so i headed to spool for some inspiration.

and came home with these.

and then chopped them all apart on advice from quilt dad.
{it was very freeing}

then i went to town making a wonky log cabin block.
and ended up with this cute little thing

as is my style lately my spoonflower label is on the back
{in a wonky log cabin frame}
and here is the entire back... i love the contrast the white binding provided
even though it wasn't "my style" in the beginning
i love working this way
and fell in love with this quilt
& it was very hard to send... but i did!!

metro done!

and just in time!

the binding is on.. the sleeve is on.. and now i'm off to deliver her to the shop!

i pieced the label into the back again... and i'm loving it!

enjoy your sunday!!

the candy box!

...another moda bake shop project!
this is my first quilt on the bake shop and i hope you like it...

the candy box finishes at 50"x60" and is a perfect youth quilt

a special thank you goes out to allison, ivonne & peggy for helping me name it!
and for taking my "sample" class and working all the kinks in the pattern out!
your support means the world to me :-)

i made mine out of hushabye... because you all know i love tula pink!

you can get a kit in hushabye from Elkhorn Quilt Company... Debbie is a sweetheart that i met at the long beach quilt festival... stop by and say hi...

for quilting i did a loopy design and used brown thread on the top & bottom...

i also made a scrappy binding for the quilt... while it takes a bit longer it is a nice way to use scraps and looks great!

also this pattern is kinda like a 2 in 1..

the outside pieces create secondary pinwheels... by changing fabric placement you can make them the focus...

here is a sample made out of Simple Abundance...

so far i have 9 blocks cut and on my design wall.

i'm not sure if i'm going to stop here and make a table topper or keep going and make a large quilt...

leave me a comment and let me know what you think I should do!

happy monday!

i had a very productive weekend!
did you?
i vowed to spend 95% of my free time sewing and 5% of my time on the computer... it wasn't easy but well worth it!

i got the pincushions done for my giveaway winners! vicky & amy they will be on their way to you both today!

i stuffed my bakeshop pincushions with fiberfill to take all the pictures... but i knew that wasn't the best thing for pincushions... i just ran out of time... but i didn't want to send vicky & amy ones they couldn't use so i went on the hunt for crushed walnut shells... because they are apparently the best for pincushions... i also had heard you need to go to the pet store to get this stuff... well i don't have a pet and i've never been to a pet store... but i did this weekend... and apparently the actual purpose of crushed walnut shells is lizard litter... who knew?

i'll also be mailing out this cute yellow chick fabric today to julia she has an etsy store and a blog... we met earlier this year at Art Star Craft Bazaar.... i bought her dress from this tula pink fabric and i think she knew i was addicted to tula pink!! she offered to swap me all her scraps for some bright and fun fabric... her package arrived while i was away and i was excited to get it when i got home! then i was off to find a suitable swap fabric which i did on saturday...

last package going out today is to rachel.. just cause...an arcadia honeybun i got her at quilt festival... my patisserie pincushion... an aviary charm pack and some leftover simplicity layer cake squares... she knows about the honeybun... but not the rest... the pincushion is hers b/c the strips were hers!... but rach.. don't use it... cause its got fiberfill.. just stick it someplace to look pretty.. like near your lamp... and then the charm pack... well that charm pack has been sitting on my table for months talking to me and asking to be made into something... and i love it but i don't know what to make... and it told me i better use it or give it to someone that will... so rachel get out that matching mini honeybun and use this charm pack and layer cake squares ok? good. thanks.

and best of all i finished my gypsy rose disappearing 9-patch topper!
kit from lani @ the quilt shoppe
pattern by rachel over @ modabakeshop

how it arrived... all cute and with a treat... but that isn't in the picture cause i ate it as soon as i opened it... i love skittles!!

blocks started like this...

and ended up like this...
i love it!!

it is a perfect size to be a topper or to lay over the back of the couch... or hang from a door...

sittin all pretty on the bench i made when i was 10.. or 11... somewhere around that age... all i know was i said dad i want to build a bench... all out of 2x4s!!!

again with the bench...with the pieced back peeking out...

here is how i did the back... i could have done it solid but i wanted to try something new...

instead of adding the label after the quilt was done i pieced it into the backing... i used 2" strips around it to frame it and then used the extra fabric from my sashing and binding... (if you want to do this make sure you cut your binding strips first so you make sure you have enough!)

and lastly... i just had to share this one... cause i think its funny... that would be me standing behind the quilt waving it around... one person photo shoots are fun!!
so did you have a productive weekend?
let me know!

p.s. i quilted it...

rachel's pinwheel quilt...

back in march... i left a comment on her post...

"as for quilting i'd mail it off to julie and ask her to quilt it with her loopy allover design on her big 10ft frame ;-) ... she'd say yes because she loves you... and frames do a wonder with a million seams and make it like they aren't even there."

and she did... and i quilted it... and here it is....

it was the first quilt i did that wasn't mine...
and i'm super happy about how it turned out...

just was a bit hard to put it back in a box and ship it away!!

but she loves it...

lets just say she sent me a super long e-mail with lots of thank yous...
that started with
it's here!!! it's here!!! it's here!!!
and went on and on
and ended with
and it's just how i imagined it would be!!! and i heart you!!!

can't get much better than that.

i also finished quilting a baby quilt this weekend...

i used a panel on one side...

with her name embroidered on it...

i'd like to say she is named after me... but she isn't...

and the other side is pieced... back in the day i made 4 matching baby quilt tops... so i'd be ready... and then they sat..and sat... i wanted to use one for this but it was square and the panel was a rectangle... so i added flannel triangles to the sides and chopped some parts of it off... and here it is... i really like how it turned out..

and just for fun... more pictures of my quilting...

stars on my red white and bold quilt...
loops on my disappearing nine patch...

and my one attempt at hand quilting... i really love how it looks but it took forever!!
