Modern Mix
16 Sewing Projects that Combine Designer Prints & Solid Fabrics
I was a fan of Jessica & her work from afar until she joined the Philadelphia Modern Quilt Guild. We quickly became friends and I was lucky enough to get to work with her last fabric line as it was being released for spring market. Once she revealed that she had completed a book I was SUPER excited for her & glad that I didn't have to keep it a secret for long!

Kindom Fabric Collection by Jessica Levitt for Windham
Carnival Quilt Pattern by me!
I did a Q&A with Jessica so you could learn a bit more about her... and so I could get some answers I wanted to know!
Julie:
If I came over to stay at your house what would I find recorded on your dvr?
Jessica:
Oh goodness. A better question would be what you wouldn't find. I record a lot of TV. Some of my favs are Glee and Amazing Race (which I love to watch with the kids). And so far I'm digging Revenge and Pan Am. The only ones we keep and don't erase are Glee and So You Think You Can Dance (no Dancing with the Stars for me...).
Julie:
We really do like a bunch of the same shows. Glee, Amazing Race, SYTYCD are also on my DVR.... but so is Dancing with the Stars!
Julie:
You know I just moved... If you moved into a new house what is the first room you would want to decorate?
Jessica:
This is actually a real possibility. We were looking at houses this past weekend. We want to stay in the area but our needs are a little different. But I don't relish the thought of moving. It sucks. And I know I would be living out of boxes for a long time. I would say it would be the kids' rooms I would decorate first. I have enough "stuff" that the living room wouldn't really get decorated per se, but just made to feel like ours. But, I like to go all out on the kids' rooms because they're small enough to be a do-able project. I know what room it wouldn't be: my bedroom. We've lived in this house over 6 years and I still haven't gotten farther than paint on the walls and furniture.
Julie:
Wow I didn't know you were considering moving! I hope you find the perfect house.... but the kids rooms?? That wasn't the answer I was hoping for... as I don't have kids rooms to decorate. I secretly was hoping you'd tell me where to start with this house! PS- I do love it out here but I miss you Jess!! Please come visit & decorate my home. :-)
Julie:
I love your new book... Is it possible for you to pick a favorite project?
Jessica:
It's difficult for sure. I guess I would go with the cover quilt, called Pebble Road. It was really where it all began. It was the first project I made for the book. The idea actually came from the "pebble" quilting I wanted on the solid background. And then the stripe of vibrant circles was added to take it to another level. I'm really pleased with the color combination and thrilled that it's such an achievable King size quilt. A close second is the Twin String Quilts. It's an traditional pattern but I love the monochromatic look with the pops of contrast. I love how tons of different prints in the same color family creates such a deep texture. And I really like the idea of two coordinating but not matching quilts on side-by-side twin beds.
Julie:
I love the Twin String Quilts too. It is probably my favorite quilt pattern in the book. My favorite pattern overall is the Gradations Bag. In general I love making bags, but something about this bag just makes it feel special & I can't wait to make it!

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 336 of 336The living room. In case anyone came over I couldn't have it bare!
If we are talking "decorating" and not unpackaing, it would probably be my sewing studio. I'm selfish like that! LOL I would have to first unpack the kitchen and our bedroom, but the first decorated part would be my sanctuary. If I don't have that place to get my "fix", then nothing else would ever get done! Good luck with decorating your new home. :)
I'd start with the kitchen. It sets the tone for the whole house.
That is a hard question to answer. I guess it would be the living room. Have fun decorating your new house. :)
I would set up and decorate my quilting studio first! It would save my sanity while I worked on everything else. Thank you for the giveaway!
I'd decorate my daughter's room first, and now that she's old enough to have her own opinions, that would be interesting!
If I were to move (and really wish I were) the first thing I would do is get furniture into place and things like computers etc up and running. BUT, as far as really getting just one room set up and decorated, it would be where I normally spend most of my time and that would be my kitchen. I love baking and cooking and because I am super organized it would have to be the first room for me.
I know it's kind of selfish but the first room I would do is my sewing room. Actually that is what I did when we moved last year!
I actually did just move! The first room that we tackled was my 2-year-old daughter's room. I had such a clear vision of what I wanted in her room... with no idea what I wanted in the rest of the house :)
Probably the living room as I've never really decorated any of my living rooms they way I wanted to.
I would have to say my kids rooms so they would feel settled in as fast as possible. Thanks for the giveaway.
Definitely my bedroom! I made the mistake of leaving it until last the last tint, so I've learned my lesson!
Bedroom - easy!
My husband and I moved about this time last year. We focused on the kitchen followed by the family room. We love to entertain which is why we tackled these rooms first.
Usually when I move, the first room I "decorate" as opposed to furnish is my bedroom - that way I have a sanctuary to go to at the end of each day that feels like it is finished.
Wow hard question! I live in the house I grew up in, so it would be really hard for me to move...lots of stuff! :) I think after the sewing room was set up, I would have to decorate my bedroom first. Have to be able to get a good night's sleep in order to sew and create!

I would decorate the living room first. I spend much of my relaxing time there and it is the first room you see upon entering my house. Thanks for the chance to win an awesome book.
If I moved into a new house I would probably decorate my room. Anything for me is always last on the list. So, making a sweet bedroom would be a dream!!
Most likely my kitchen-I love my kitchen! Looks like a great book!!
the 1st room i unpack is the kitchen for functionality, but the 1st room i'd like to decorate is my bedroom! (even though that hasn't happened with my most recent move...)
The kitchen. That's where I spend most of my time and I like it the most.
If I moved into a new house the first room I would decorate is the bathroom. To me a well designed bathroom is relaxing, calming and perfect for pampering. I want it to smell wonderful and look good.
I would want to decorate my sewing room first but would feel way too guilty if I did! So I'd probably start with the living room. Thanks for a great giveaway & terrific interview.
Kitchen. It is always the kitchen for me. More than decorating, it is the organizing part I enjoy!
I would decorate the room I spend the most time in. For me that would be either my kitchen or my bedroom. Good luck! I hope you are enjoy the new house
Would have to be a craft/sewing room for me! I've never had one- right now I'm in a spare bedroom (with an actual bed set up) and have absolutely very little room. Would love fixing up my own room with all the things that make me happy.
The living room.
Thanks for thw chance to win!
Deborah
First to decorate: family/living room. First to unpack: kitchen. These are the areas where we all come together, so they take priority.
I would for sure decorate my bed room first...it is my sanctuary!
nhsarab at yahoo dot com
I'd decorate my daughter's room to help her feel more at home and comfortable with a new place.
I would do the Great room (living room/ kitchen), because that is the first room company would see when they walk in.
We actually did just move from Mississippi to Missouri. Our MUST was the bedroom- we were in desperate need of a sanctuary in the midst of the boxes!
I just moved too. The first room I unpacked was the kitchen, but the first room I decorated was the living room. That's where we spend the most time and that's the room people see first when they come into the house.
I'd do the kitchen and dining first! Thats where we and our friends spend most of the time in our house!
Thanks for the opportunity to win this fabulous book! It looks so wonderful, I'm entering all the giveaways on this blog hop before ordering my copy (if I do not win)
Cheers from India...
The kitchen. We spend so much of our time there. Homework, music, eating.
I would decorate my living room first, and then my bedroom.
Thanks for the great giveaway! Happy house decorating to you!
The kitchen because it is the heart of the family and I would want it to feel like home right away!
I've just moved house and it was the bedroom.. some where to escape bliss
It would have to be my sewing room ;-) Actually it would be great to do that over the weekend! Thanks for the giveaway.
I would want to decorate the kitchen first. It's a very manageable room and it makes me feel better to have a clean, fresh kitchen.
My email is beccasmith02@earthlink.net :)
Definitely the living room. I spend most of my time there, and once that's decorated it feels more inviting to have people over. :D Thanks for a lovely giveaway!
The room I would start on would be my craft room because that would be the hardest one to do. I have so much stuff to go in there it would be the largest room in the house. I would have to find a house with a large family room for to to take over. Thanks for the giveaway.
Definitely the kitchen - I spend so much time in it!
Like many others, I'd decorate the living room - the place where you relax at the end of the day and don't want to think about all the other jobs (like decorating!) that need doing. Love the book, by the way.
I would decorate my bedroom first. I just redecorated it and realized what a great retreat the bedroom is.
Second though, would be my sewing room. You can't sew if you don't get good sleep! But if you can't sleep, you gotta be able to sew. :D
Aww man a topic near and dear to me right now. We had about 15 forclosures in a 3 block radius in the last 5 years. It pretty much took every cent of our equity and killed it so we will be staying in our "5 year starter" house for 15 years. I digress.
In my pretend new house I would decorate my pretend kitchen that is big enough to also have a little love seat sitting area. Lve gathering in the kitchen. Current house has tiny kitchen and no dining room. I always pictured an informal gathering space in the kitchen. I would make it all eclectic and chic. Friends and family would sit and chat while sipping tea. Just lovely.
The first room I would decorate would be the living room followed with my sewing room. Thanks for the giveaway!!!
shaza.zain(at)gmail(dot)com
The kitchen would be the first room to get done up first since that's the heart of the house for us.
Since I hope I live at "Casa Finally" if I ever move again it will probably be with one of my daughters. But if I did move, Comfort would sought first, comfort in every room, then, and only then would the decorations begin with my favorite room, the sewing room! What else? That's where I spend most of my waking time and where my friends gather. Then I'd fix up a charming but practical kitchen.
Would love to add Jessica Levitts book to my library! Thanks for the opportunity to win.
I would have to go with the kitchen , dining area, the heart of my home.
Either the Family Room or the Kitchen! Looks like an awesome book!
The first room that I entered would be the room to decorate first. Probably the den or living area. Great giveaway!quiltexas@gmail.com
I would do our bedroom first....it is my sanctuary :)
Bedroom definitely - comfort at night is a must
mystica123athotmaildotcom
I'd like to think it would be my sewing studio.
I would decorate the living room first. We spend so
Much time there as a family that it would need to be the first beautiful room!
I would start with the kitchen and living room because that is what company sees. Thank you for the chance to win this great book. Take care and God bless, Cory
Everytime I've moved (and there have been a lot of times) I've started in my bedroom. Its great to have a calm peaceful place to sleep and wake-up when the rest of your house is in chaos. Then I do the room with the door to the house I would usually enter through so I come home to something lovely to see.
Decorate? We're supposed to decorate our homes? Oops...maybe that's why nothing matches in our house!;)
My husband got transferred in his job and we will be moving in the spring. My kids love to be in my sewing room with me and I would love to design a room to be the Creating room. I want to make it a space for me to sew and work on projects and also have it be designed for the kids to work on their own projects that use their own imaginations. I also don't want it to be stuck in the corner of the basement anymore! That is one of the things that gets me excited to go through the pain of selling, moving, and unpacking.
Weird as it may be, I would decorate the kitchen - that seems to be where our family spends the most time, and I'd love a start-over to make ours look ... well more like me! :)
THE BEDROOM TO PROVIDE A CALM RESTING PLACE WHILE COMPLETING THE OTHER ROOMS
EVEN THOUGH IT'S WORK,ENJOY DOING YOUR NEW HOME!
jldouglas@wispwest.net
I want that book even if I don't win, I just love it :o) Amie in Tn.
WOW... I can't wait to see this book in person.. such lovely possibilities spinning in my head at the moment!
I have moved many times and the room that always comes first for me is the living room. I need to have that one place where we can sit and relax after a long day of unpacking, arranging, etc. Of course I haven't moved since I've started sewing so if I move again the sewing area may come first ;)
I love that pebble quilt! I think I would start my decorating with the kitchen, since it is so important that everything is in it's rightful place as soon as possible! Close second would be the living room because that's what people will see first!
First room to decorate would have to be the sewing room! :o)
I'd decorate the family room first. It's where my library would be and wherever I'm surrounded by books and my family is where I feel most at home. A family room also means comfy sofas, chairs, warm lighting, quilts to curl up under.
I'm thinking I'd want to decorate the room I'd spend the most time in. For me and my family it would be the kitchen/family room combo room. I can't wait to read more about your journey in this new home and to learn about all those projects that have been stirring in your brain these last few months waiting to find their way out~
Hi Julie--thanks for the heads up that I'd left my comment on the wrong post...
I would first decorate your gathering space. That way you'll have a comfortable place in which to visit and welcome people, without having to have the entire house guest-ready.
wordygirl at earthlink dot net
I would start with the dining room. My family loves to eat!
I would decorate my bedrrom. It is where you get your rest and need to be uncluttered!
I would want to decorate my sewing room so I could start sewing, but you've to start with the main rooms, probably the living room or bedroom.
We moved into a new house a year ago, and the first room we decorated was the Living Room. I think mostly because it is the first room you see when you come into the house, and secondly, I just love it!! It has a fireplace, and I ALWAYS wanted a fireplace. It's warm and cozy. Hope you are getting settled into your new place :-)
The living room would be first. All the others would flow from there. Got to have my comfy chair and my laptop!
The first room I would decorate would be the bedroom so there was a quiet place to go at the end of the day, without looking at piles of things I "should" be doing!
The book looks like it has lots of exciting new things. Would love to have it.
For me, my bedroom is my nest. I would decorate that first, and then the more "public" rooms of the house.
This book looks absolutely beautiful! The cover quilt is divine, and that bag really must be a part of my life!
Thanks for the chance!
I would decorate the living room first since it's the room I spend the most time in!
I would set up my crafting area. We don't entertain so I don't feel bad about having an unorganized living room right away.
Thanks for the giveaway!
my bedroom.
Sleep is a wonderful thing.
I'd say I'd decorate our main family room...it's the one with the most personality! Would love to win.
I would decorate my daughter's room first!!!
mcintosh dot kimberley at gmail dot com
The first room I would do would be my bedroom so I would have one room finished and could enjoy being there sleeping knowing I wouldn't trip on any boxes if I got up in the middle of the night.
The family room has always been what I tackled first. It's where everyone hangs out so it needs to be done first so everyone feels at home right away.
kdavis1@centurytel.net
Of course, the sewing room. It is my space, and being the only "girl" in the family, no one else would even care if their room was "decorated". Have fun decorating your new house.
I have moved several times and the den is always the first place I decorate, this is where we gather. Main bath, kitchen, dining next and the rest of the rooms when I can get to them. Good luck Julie with your decorating as you settle in.
Well I also moved. Three months ago we moved after being in the same house for over 20 yrs. Even though it was time to move, it was still hard. We still have a few pictures to hang, the living/family room was the first room we put together.
Thanks for the giveaway and a chance to win. The book sounds wonderful and full of great projects. Looking forward to the rest of the tour.
usairdoll(at)gmail(dot)com
The kids bedroom followed by our bedroom, then the living room or first room people see when they walk in, then kitchen, then bathroom. Unfortunately, the more creative rooms don't take priority for me over the sleeping peace rooms and the ones people spend the most time in. But I'm obsessive about moving in and decorating a new home VERY quickly!
If I were to move into a house again (we live in an RV fulltime and travel), I would decorate the kitchen as that is where all my family gathers when we are together.
The living room would be my first room to decorate!
I confess, I moved into a new house (the 1st we have ever owned) 2 Years ago and none of the rooms are decorated as I would like yet. They are works in progress but the most work is done on the lounge room where I entertain and relax. It is where I spend most of my time & the space most people see. Plus my kitchen and bathroom require major structural overhauls so they are down the list for a while.
When we moved, I did the family room first since that is a place where we all gather--to watch tv, talk after meals (even eat meals there sometimes when we all are here).
My desired order would be kid's room, then den, then my room, then family work room (aka sewing etc room.) We moved last year, and n reality, I decorate with what I have on hand. So the decoration order went:
living room
good enough job on kid's room
kitchen
guest room
Now we are slowly in the process of growing into our space. One perk of not having things to decorate with, is that I get to really figure out how we will use a room, then buy things to fulfill its purpose, then add extra touches once the large items are in place.
I am constantly moving and I do a great job at unpacking. I can unpack and set up a house in three to four days. I've never done it alone so I should say me and another person can unpack and set up a house in three to four days. However, decorating I am not the best at. I do hang my artwork and set up the rooms, but I don't paint anything. I suppose the room I definitely make sure looks how I want it to look is my sewing room. I've been lucky to always have a sewing room or area!
My email is tsoniki at gmail dot com.
I did our living room first. The house is small and the this room is visible from everywhere. In our case it's what anyone will see if they even if they only step just inside our front door.
I'd want to decorate the kitchen - the heart of the home.
Bedroom - so I could escape from the mess in the rest of the house!
I would first decorate the first room you see when entering the house! That way it would be welcoming to me and to guests. Thanks for the chance to win!
Oh, such an easy question for me. My sewing room has been packed for over a year because we are looking to buy a new home. I want to build cubicles for my tons of stash. I want to decorate a new sewing room. I want to move soon :)
I think I'd start with the living room, because we spend a lot of time there, however the master bedroom is statistically the most decorating-neglected, so that is another great option!
I would need to have my bedroom done first, just so I'd have a little oasis in all the moving confusion.
It wouldn't be my bedroom, since I mostly have my eyes closed there. It would be the eat-in kitchen. That's where I relax and spend time with my husband. Kathie L in Allentown
It would definitely have to be the kitchen.
I always do the kitchen first....in my family it really is the heart of the home....I like having a big table for cooking, visiting and using my computer.....that is where I am sitting now :0).
Thanks so much for the chance to win this lovely book.
Happy sewing
Bedroom first. Otherwise it will be left for last and then you may never get to it. You need a retreat at the end of the day and the bedroom is it!
LOVE the book, thanks!
I'd start with my bedroom so I always have a comfy haven to retire to.
I also moved last week. The first room: sewing room. Joking! First we made the living room nice.
Bye
Susanne
I'd decorate the den/family room first since that's the one we live in the most. Thanks for the giveaway.
my duaghters nursery would be top of
the list with a peter rabbit themed center wall!
I'd start with the family room. That's where most of my family's time is spent, so that makes sense to me as a good first choice.
I would start with my daughter's room. She's two years old, so it's fun to use happy, fun colors to brighten her space.
The living room is the first room I would decorate -- we spend so much time in there. :)
Yes, I would start with the living room, too.
Thanks for the giveaway.
The living room or kitchen would be the first room decorated because it is th most "lived in." Can't wait to see pictures of what you decide!
I would decorate my living room - that is where I spend my relaxing time. Thanks for the chance this book has some very swish designs - love it!!
I am in the middle of unpacking right now! I just made a huge move from Austin to Ann Arbor. The first room that I unpacked and have started to decorate is the living room. I spend the most time in here sewing, watching tv and spending time with my cute parrot, Hector.
I would decorate the living room as it's the room guests usually see first -- but I'd spend just as much time organizing the sewing room.
I would want to decorate my sewing room first! But I'd probably do the kitchen/living room/dining room area because that's where friends and family spend their time when they come over.
I would decorate the first room you would see upon entering my new home. In the home I'm in now, that would be the living room. :) Love the book, thanks for the chance!
I would do the kitchen first. Make it clean, bright and comfortable. You need food -- it might as well be prepared in an enjoyable place.
the living room since that is where we spend most of our time ! however, if we move , that might change ! oh , yeah , SEWING ROOM ; however if I moved I would not have a lot of time to hide , I mean , sew in my getaway escape area !!!
It is a toss-up for me between master bedroom and living room. Rest is important to keep functioning well so the place where we rest is priority in our home.
I would get the bedrooms ready first as they would be quick to do, then you can relax knowing your bed is ready for sleeping after you work hard at getting your kitchen ready so your can cook. Then living room and now you can spend all the time you want on your sewing room.
first room to decorate? your bedroom! you need a sanctuary where you can refresh and recover from all that unpacking !!
am absolutely in love with this book's creativity and colour...thx for the opp! blstef1 at mts dot net
I really think I'd pick the guest bath. It's small, so I wouldn't be overwhelmed, and it would make me feel good about having people over sooner. Then after that, the kitchen!
When we moved two years ago the first room we decorated was our living room. I'd probably stick to that as the first room to decorate if/when we move again.
I recently moved cross country--and the first room I am attempting to decorate is the living room. BIG challenge! Would love to win the book!
The master bedroom.
I would start with the kitchen, cause if it's not organized nothing flows & then I'd decorate the living room cause we spend alot of time in there! Thanks for a great giveaway! That book looks awesome! :)
The first room I always get settled and arranged is my workroom! I feel all upside-down until that room is workable.
Decorate or unpack?
Kitchen must be unpacked first, but bedroom decorated first....
I really hope never to move again. I told my husband the only way he would get me to move out of our house was in a body bag. He said, "That can be arranged." (;
The kitchen. Since so much time is spent there and even when you have guests after still unpacking, people always migrate to the kitchen. (plus sewing can be had there, while unpacking the "sewing studio" aka guest bedroom :)
I'd start with the living room so that when people came over, it wouldn't look like I hadn't unpacked at all!
I always decorate the bathrooms first. I have to live in the rest of the rooms for a while to see what they tell me. VermontPines@aol.com
