Gravity Quilt Block Colors: Block 1 - Horizon

A few local & online quilt shops have started their Gravity block of the month programs, and the requests about fabric color placements within the blocks have started to come in. So I thought it might be a good idea to have a some blog posts for those of you who are interested in making a spot on Gravity quilt.
This is the entire Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton kit that matches the cover quilt. The kit includes the book, 6 background fabrics and 3 packs of 10" squares - 36 squares are in each pack:

This is the book + the pack that has months/blocks 1, 2 & 3:

The fabrics are in order in the pack. The first 6 in the pack are fabrics A through F of Block 1, as noted in the book:

These are the next 6 fabrics that are also for a Block 1:

I suggest taping a small scrap of each fabric next to the diagrams in the book as you go. Cut desired shapes first and then use a scrap vs. cutting a corner off of each 10" square.

Here are the 6 greens for month 1 all together:

Here are 6 red/oranges for month 1 all together:

Now, as I mentioned in the Introduction of the book, the intention is that you will have fun making your Gravity quilt and have fun with the subtle color variations within the Gravity quilt blocks. There is no need to stress about precisely matching fabric or color placement from block to block.

The beauty of this design, and the variety of fabrics and colors used to create it, is that each quilt will take on a subtle and distinct look and feel of its own. With that in mind, for those of you who REALLY want to know which colors I used where, I hope you will find these posts to be helpful.

If you're looking to order a Gravity Quilt kit, they are available now from Fat Quarter Shop and Hawthorne Threads, as well as other local and online quilt shops.

Tell us in the comments below: Will you be making a "spot on" Gravity quilt? Will you mix it up with your kit colors? OR are you making a Gravity quilt entirely of your own fabric selection, or something else?

Remember to share your photos on social media with the #GravityQuilt tag & have fun!

I think my kit is about to ship across the Atlantic from FQS. I'm hoping mind will be spot on (personal ineptitude about colours notwithstanding).

I am waiting for my kit from FQ Shop. In processing, so hopefully won't have to wait too much longer! Mine will be a spot on. I fell in love with the one you made. Why change perfection? Thanks, Julie!

My kit from FQ Shop arrived today (I preordered on Christmas). It'll be the second time in ten years I've liked the sample so much I matched the fabric. I'm super excited to start.

My kit (from StashAddictQuilts.com) came today. I plan on making it as close to yours as I can and then using printed batiks to make a second.
Thanks for the color info!

I'm getting the monthly kits from Calico Cottage (a shop I found online) and am currently waiting for the kit for block #2. I'm not making a 'spot-on' version; I will just do color placements as the mood strikes.

I plan to make two quilts. One will be from the kit I ordered from FQS and the other will be from my collection of black, white, and red fabric. I love the spot on quilt but I'm excited to see how it will look in red, black, and whites.

I would love to make a "Gravity" quilt in my quilt stash and with the Robert Kaufman selection.

I plan on making more than one! The (1) first with the solids that came in my kit, the (2) second with Batiks that I am already pulling from my stash and then (3) Shades of Gray for an Anti-Gravity version! Outstanding! Way to go, Julie! I adore your patterns!

I purchased the kit from my local quilt shop in June in Orleans,Ontario, and signed up for the class starting end of September. My husband liked it so much, he decided to also buy a kit and take the class (he is newer to quilting than me). I decided to make mine a king-size quilt. We had 3 classes, one month apart and homework in between. I finished my quilt between xmas and new year. I brought it to be quilted, and January 2nd I got it back from the long-arm quilter. I choose a spiral all over design, so that it would not compete with the angles. It just suits and the gray coordinates with our large gray fabric headboard. I love it and am pleased that I did not try to quilt it myself. Oh, and while I am hand sewing the binding, our cats have given it their blessing. Another one bites the dust. yeah!

Fell in love with this pattern the minute I saw it. I live in London and have just received confirmation that my Gravity Quilt kit has shipped. SO very excited but slightly apprehensive as I'm not an experienced quilter but if I take my time, I'm sure I'll get there. Do you think it is possible to quilt this on a regular machine?

I bought the kit from Craftsy earlier this year during an amazing sale. I've just dug in and I'll be making a spot on version as this will be only my SECOND quilt. But who knows... inspiration may arise!
