Why I've been a bit mia...

I have avoided making this post.  Despite having a blog I'm a pretty private person.

I'm getting on an airplane in a few hours to fly to LA.  My 3 year old nephew Elijah has Leukemia.  He was diagnosed two weeks ago today.  The initial shock has passed and now we are all adapting to a "new" normal life.  After 13 days in the hospital Elijah was released on Monday.  My brother asked me to come out to LA for a few weeks to help out and be another set of hands.  We have lots of treatments and challenges ahead of us but I'm confident in Elijah's strength.  The love and support from family, friends, co-workers and so on has been amazing over the last 2 weeks.

Remember the Zig Zag quilt that I made for him a while back?  Well my brother & sister in law discovered that this had become his favorite of all the quilts I made because it had a "fuzzy backing."  Since I made it for Elijah the quilt is only 36" x 48" big.  My brother & sister in law asked for a new larger version.

The result was the Stash Stack Quilt that I posted about a few days ago.  It's 54" x 72" and big enough that it can cover the bed when mom or dad cuddles with Elijah.
Karin & Elijah with his new Stash Stack Quilt

I was told that upon receiving his new quilt... he said
"it's my favorite daddy"
and that was all I needed to know.

While I'm in LA I might blog a lot... I might not... I'm not really sure yet.  Karin does have a sewing machine and her stash grows with every visit I make to LA.  The GPS in the car might just drive me to Robert Kaufman's offices one day... who knows.  Either way please understand that if it takes me a bit longer to get back to you on an e-mail it isn't because I don't care about you.  Also my amazing mom is going to take care of shipping out any orders that are placed in the shop.  Patterns & Magazines will be easy... everything else might take an extra day or two.

Thanks for all your love & support.

-Julie

I'm so sorry to hear about your nephew. I have a daughter (named Aleah, same name different spelling than your neice). She passed away when she was 9 months old, but I have all the quilts that were gifted to us by local quilt guilds and the Linus Project. She never had a time to get "stuff", so these quilts are an important part of remembering her. I'm a new quilter, and it is one of the reasons I want to get into quilting! It's amazing how much security these things can bring.

Julie, what a shock for your Family. Elijah and all of your Family will be in my thoughts and prayers, even though I am on the other side of the world. I am sure that being wrapped in love from your quilt is such a comfort to Elijah! Hugs from Sandy.

Sometimes kids show the adults how to be strong. I'm adding my prayers to all the others coming your way. You may need some sewing to keep you calm - it works for me!

Oh, Julie! I think having a seriously ill child is one of the worst things that can happen in anyone's life! I'm glad your quilts bring Elijah comfort and glad you are able to spend some time helping them.

I wish Elijah a speedy recovery. It's wonderful that you can be there to support your brother and his family.

Oh man, Julie. My hearts just breaks for you guys. I know how difficult it is with my husband, I can't image how hard it must be with a small child so sick. We will definitely be keeping you in our prayers. I hope that the treatment is as quick and painless as possible.

Thanks for sharing so we can keep Elijah and your family in our thoughts and prayers. I hope your trip goes well. Love your new quilt for him. There is definitely something special about a warm, cuddly blanket made by someone who loves you!

I've been so behind with blogs this month, I just heard about this today through FB. I'm so sorry your family is struggling with this, it's devastating. I'm sure all the love and support you have to give Elijah will help him get through this tough time! I love his new quilt!

God bless your little nephew. I'll be keeping him in my prayers. I know all too well what you're going through; my 4 yr old neice has been fighting neuroblastoma for the past three years. Keep supporting your family with all the love you can send their way! Does he have a caringbridge site? I'd like to follow his treatments if you don't mind. Here's a link to my neice's page if you're interrested: www.caringbridge.com/visit/rosemarietodd God bless!

I'm crying with you. I don't know how I missed this post... :(

I feel like I "know" Elijah a bit through you... and I definitely know all the love he has.

I am praying with all my heart.
