Rock Candy Sew Along

Rock Candy is one of my favorite patterns, and it's the perfect fast finish for this time of year. I've made it more than 20 times. It can be made from scraps, charm packs, jelly rolls & more. The fabrics you pick and placement you choose can make it look so unique & original. Sign ups for the sew along are happening now. You can get the PDF pattern here.

Here are some of the many Rock Candy table toppers I've made.

Clever placement creates a focus on different shapes.

Careful placement of lights and darks.

Rainbow colors pop!

Fussy cut Eagles fabric featured.

3 coordinated toppers from the same fabric collection, one in each color-way.

Fussy cut hands from Tula Pink's HomeMade featured in the center.

Two solid colors offset by a strong background.

Scrappy Tula Pink featuring HomeMade and True Colors.

Rock Candy is versatile. You can make it high contrast, low contrast, or all in the same color family. You can make it with solids, prints, blenders, batiks, or mix of those fabrics.

It's scrap friendly. Put those bits to work that you're wondering what to make with them.

It's quick! You can make one when you need a quick gift, for a holiday table spread, or just because you want to make a fast finish for yourself.

It's foundational for a lot of other Jaybird Quilts patterns. If you can make a Rock Candy table topper, you'll have a lot of luck making most Jaybird Quilts patterns.

Sign ups for the sew along are happening now. Let's make a Rock Candy table topper together this fall!

I hope you'll join us for our sew along.

Journey2Nebula: A Skill Builder Series

The Journey2Nebula is a self paced skill builder series with cutting & sewing videos where I teach you all kinds of tips for getting started with sewing my patterns. Find ease with cutting & sewing shapes cut on the bias, tips & tricks for matching points, and greater accuracy cutting & sewing 60-degree shapes. You can sign up with your email address for the Journey2Nebula to get a weekly email to help keep you on track throughout the series.

Complete 8 Jaybird Quilts patterns, all with video tutorial instructions, at your own pace. The tutorials are free to access, all you'll need to complete the skill builder are the patterns & the materials to make them.

The goal is to help you familiarize yourself with using the Hex N More & Super Sidekick (or Sidekick) rulers, cutting, & piecing shapes from the rulers. We'll work through small, approachable patterns together with a different skill building pattern each week.

Other than the cost of the rulers, patterns, and materials, there is no additional cost to participate. Templates are included in all of the patterns. All of the patterns have full color directions.

The projects that we'll make are:

Seaside: We'll cut and piece diamonds from the Sidekick or Super Sidekick ruler.

Lucky Charm: We'll cut and piece half hexagons from the Hex N More ruler.

Jawbreaker: We'll work on strip piecing, then cut and piece triangles from the Hex N More, Sidekick, or Super Sidekick ruler.

Rock Candy: We'll cut and piece diamonds and triangles from the Sidekick or Super Sidekick ruler. How the table topper is sewn together will demonstrate a similar approach used to sew together the Nebula quilt top.

Candy Dish: We'll cut and piece hexagons and triangles from the Hex N More ruler.

Gazebo: We'll cut and piece half hexagons and triangles from the Hex N More ruler. How the table topper is sewn together will demonstrate the same approaches used to sew together many of the blocks and the Nebula quilt top.

Gemstones: We'll cut and piece triangles and half triangles with the Sidekick or Super Sidekick ruler.

Infinity Stones: This quilt pattern is in my new book Quilts for Baby & Beyond. We'll cut and piece triangles and diamonds with the Super Sidekick ruler.

Patterns and rulers are available from independent quilt shops. Ask your local quilt shops if they have the Journey2Nebula patterns & rulers, order them online, or get the PDF patterns here.

These patterns each offer dedicated focus with the rulers, shapes, and any sewing techniques mentioned. All patterns are rotary cut from fabric strips and machine pieced. They are precut friendly, using 5" squares or 2.5" strips, great for breaking into those precut bundles or stash busting.

Sign up with your email address for the Journey2Nebula to get a weekly email to help keep you on track throughout the series. Share your progress with us on social media using the hashtag #Journey2Nebula so that we can share in the fun with you. I hope that you have as much fun on your Journey to Nebula as I did creating it for you!
