FAQ

  • Jaybird Quilts Patterns

    • I need help with the pattern I’m working on! Something isn’t right.

Take a break. Drink some water. Have a snack. Get some fresh air. Come back to the pattern with fresh eyes. Identify the page number & the step number of the pattern where you’re stuck or need help. Go back and review the process leading up to that step, and then read ahead and see what comes next.

If you still need help, email us at jaybirdquilts@gmail.com and include photos of your seam allowances, then we’ll get back to you the next business day that we’re open. If you’ve already emailed us, and then figured it out on your own, reply to that email and let us know. It will help to save us some time!

  • I’m brand new to quilting. Which one of your patterns should I make first?

We recommend our Quilts for Baby & Beyond book first and foremost for beginning quilters: http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2021/04/quilts-for-baby-and-beyond.html

This book is the most comprehensive of our books and goes further to break down the piecing process to make it more accessible. We also have a tutorial series on YouTube for many of the quilt projects in the book: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCtv0ArQRt3cvsUTNEEIiXtGNWf_Xwl4t

Ask for it at a local or independent online retailer: http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/p/where-to-buy-my-patterns.html

  • Do your patterns have any Y Seams, or Inset, or Set In seams?

Great question! We aren't fans of Y seams (Inset or Set In seams). They can be tedious work at the sewing machine and we’re here for a good time. You won't find any pesky Y seams in any of our Jaybird Quilts or Lazy Girl Designs patterns. We do have the occasional partial seam in a few patterns, and we’ll help you with detailed diagrams to have success with them.

  • Do you recommend starching the fabric before cutting?

I personally do not use starch on my fabrics. I find that using starch is a personal preference. It’s not something I would stop people from doing, and it’s not something that I do myself. With that said, I do not factor starch use into my fabric requirements for patterns, so if you do use starch you may need to allot for that in your fabric purchases.

  • Do you prewash your fabrics?

It depends. I do not prewash precut fabrics, including fat quarters and fat eighths. I have prewashed some yardage, like dark dyed batiks, with color catchers in the washer.

  • Is it OK to press quilt seams open? Do you press all of your seams open?

It’s OK to press quilt seams open when using high quality quilting cotton and thread. I’ve been pressing my seams open for almost 20 years and I’ve never had an issue with bearding (when the batting comes through between the seams) or seams opening up.

I press my seams open as I go. It takes time, but I find that my projects lay flat this way. I use my iron on high heat with steam. To keep my fingers from burning, I use a heat-resistant stiletto that is great at helping to open the seams while pressing with the iron.

  • How can I make a quilt in a different size than the option(s) listed on pattern?

When it comes to size options for quilts, Julie listed the fabric requirements based on what she felt would scale out best based on the block sizes of the quilt. With that said, you are free to make an alternate size version of a quilt pattern, too. You can learn more about Jaybird Quilts pattern size options and making an alternate size quilt here: http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2012/03/size-options.html

  • What are the colors used in the Gravity Quilt?

You'll want to check the blog posts for each Gravity block to see the list of Kona Cotton colors used in each block: http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2014/11/gravity-quilt.html

  • How do you wash a finished quilt?

Check out my quilt care guidelines.

  • Jaybird Quilts Rulers

    • Can I use the Lazy Angle Ruler in place of the Sidekick Ruler or vice versa?

The Lazy Angle and Sidekick rulers do have different angles and cut different shapes, so they cannot be used as substitutes for each other. Templates are included in all Jaybird Quilts & Lazy Girl Designs patterns that use specialty rulers.

  • Can I use a die cutter to cut the same shapes that your rulers cut to make your patterns?

We’ve never tested our patterns using die cut shapes and we don’t have a die cutter in the studio, so we can’t make any die cutting recommendations in place of our rulers or Fussy Cut Shapes.

For cutting assistance using the Jaybird Quilts Fussy Cut Shapes or any Jaybird Quilts ruler, we recommend the Sew Magnetic Cutting System by SewTites

  • PDF Patterns

    • Where can I buy the PDF versions of your patterns?

  • How can I access the PDF pattern on an iPad or iPhone?

Follow the steps listed here.

Please review our Troubleshooting instructions posted here.

  • Quilt Guild Inquiries

    • How can we request a door prize or gift bag donation for our guild or organization?

We are refraining from fulfilling donation requests at this time. Julie previously shipped all donation requests from her home studio before she had small children and when we were just Jaybird Quilts. Now that we’re Jaybird Quilts & Lazy Girl Designs and Julie has small children at home, we no longer have the opportunity to ship donations requests. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Can I book Julie for lectures or classes?

Julie has opted to stop teaching in-person or to groups while she has a young family.  A few other teachers we recommend are:

Gudrun Erla of GE Designs: http://www.gequiltdesigns.com/

Violet Craft: violet@violetcraft.com http://www.violetcraft.com/aboutme/

Julie does offer many online sew along programs that your guild can participate in as a group at any time: http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/p/sew-alongs.html

  • Can I get permission to display a quilt I made with your pattern in a quilt show?

Yes, you have permission to display the quilts you made with our patterns in quilt shows. Due to copyright restrictions, the quilt(s) cannot be offered for sale. Please be sure to credit the quilt pattern design and designer as:

Quilt Pattern - [INSERT NAME OF PATTERN HERE] by Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts

  • Can I sell quilts / projects from your patterns in a fundraiser or on Etsy?

We wish you the best in your venture, however we do not grant permission for our designs to be made for sale. The copyrights for Jaybird Quilts patterns can be considered void if the patterns are used for resale purposes with our knowledge. Our copyrights are considered protected if the patterns are only used for personal purposes.

In order to grant permission for Jaybird Quilts patterns to be used for resale purposes, we would have to begin an official licensing program, which we don't have any immediate plans or resources to begin implementing.

We’re sorry you cannot use our patterns for that purpose, but we do hope you enjoy it for your personal use. We hope you are able to find other projects that will work with your efforts.
