wip wednesday... block of the month

so i mentioned on sunday that mom & i had finally started working on our collaborative project...

the moda green piece bom with rouenneries...

well mom got super motivated over the weekend...

and instead of a block... or two a month....

mom got all 20 done!!

now the pressure is on me to get the pieced blocks done!

one of my favs!

for those who haven't seen the quilt...

this is the original one

and we are doing redwork blocks instead of wool appliqué

and we are going to use all french general fabrics!

so my question for you today...

are you working on a bom? or have you?

and did you do one block a month?... or sometimes did they sit & wait... and then all get worked on at once?

wip wednesday... organizing the fabric stash

the day has come.

that my stash needs an overhaul

a total reorganization.

so you have seen my studio
and the mess my stash was last time i moved

but i've never shown you my "fabric closet"

until now...

here it is.

about 1/4 to 1/3 of my walk in closet...

isn't clothes... it's fabric.

some organized.. some not...

this is 8 years of leftovers & such.

so if you saw my recent sunday stash report...

you know that i discovered "mini bolts" by polar notions
and i'm totally hooked!

i started with this pile of food fabrics...
which i'm adding to for "one day"

and turned it into this!!

one bolt of licorice.. because i have lots of yardage

and the other bolt is all the assorted yardage of other prints!

then i threw a whole bunch of fabrics...

{ mostly new stuff }

that hasn't found a home yet... into this laundry basket.

i took the basket... a bunch of mini bolts...

and went to work!

here is the result!

my favorite section so far.

i've got more... probably enough to fill an entire shelf.

wip i missed wednesday... again

yesterday was a busy day..

so busy that i never got a chance to blog... oh well it happens!

so what have i been working on?

all kinds of things.

i keep jumping from one thing to another.. trying to knock lots of little things off my list!

one thing i like to do is sew for charity.

i made 2 blocks for the charity quilt that the members of bee beautiful are working on together... thanks rebekah for coordinating this!  you can read more about it here...

then i made a smaller star for "A Quilt for Kate McRae"

and i have another small star that matches in the works for "Love for Layla Grace"

and last month i made these 3 blocks for "Cancer is Sew Done"

their motto.... "Make a block, take a stand"

blocks will be turned into quilts... that will then be used to raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand... one of my favorite charities!

wip wednesday... my oldest quilt still in progress

do you ever wonder how i decide what wip to blog about?

sometimes it's easy.. there is something on my design wall... you haven't seen it.. done.

sometimes it's something i haven't worked on in a while and just decided to pull out

and then sometimes.

like today.

the day itself inspires the post.

today is march 17th.

and to most of you...

that means it is st. patty's day.

{and it is...}

but it is also the founder's day for my sorority

i am a proud sister of delta phi epsilon

so how does this relate to quilting??

easy!

this is my oldest wip!!

6/15/2003 to be specific.

i happen to have a spreadsheet with start and finish dates for all my quilts... so i also know that this was the fourth quilt i ever started... some people may call it obsessive.. i call it detailed.

anyway.

i finished the top on 7/10/2005 & haven't done a darn thing to it since.

why you ask?

because when i started it..

i was an inexperienced quilter.

and made a lot of mistakes.

and now i have no idea how to finish it.

but it has such sentimental value... that i have to come up with a plan... somehow!

 here are some of the issues.

with text on the photos to show...

so.

we have quilter's cotton

mixed with flannel

old sheets

fleece

linen

a placemat

lots of fuse-able interfacing

all kinds of applique

and markers!

how the heck do i fix the hold..

and quilt this thing.

without breaking a million needles??

cause like i said.

this thing has crazy sentimental value.

including that this purple shirt in the photo above

is the first letters i ever got.

wip wednesday... elijah's twin quilt

so back in july of last year.

i found "beep beep" fabric @ the long beach quilt festival

it's by hoffman & i had been searching for it...

so when i spotted it... i bought a ton of it to make a twin quilt down the road for elijah... i put it on the back burner thinking i had plenty of time... well he has been in his twin bed for almost 2 months now... since his little sister will be here soon... {another 2 months}

{ this was him a year ago... but so cute i had to share!}

so no more back burner...

gotta make some progress!!

i decided to change the measurements

& do a twin size version of my play school quilt

here is the first half laid out on the floor

{the design wall isn't big enough!}

the rest of the fabric.

for backing.. binding.. pillows.. etc

is being stored in here

i have a few of these storage baskets from target

& use them to keep my most current wips.

the handles fold in like this...

and it makes it so you can stack them like this.

wip wednesday... rural jardins

i fell for rachel's scruffily quilt right away

how could you not?

it probably didn't help that it was in hushabye

and we all know how i feel about tula pink...

well since i just finished this top a few days ago...

i decided i needed to start my scruffily quilt

so what fabric?

then it all came to me...

rachel's was 6 blocks by 6 blocks which is about 57" square

i'm thinking 7x9??

or 8x8??

any suggestions...

wip wednesday... snowed in

you know my favorite spot to talk pictures of my quilts...

this is how it usually looks....

and this is how it looks right now.

snow is heavy.

really heavy.

and we are nervous that we may loose some trees.

not fun.

oh and we lost power today.

twice.

for a while.

also not fun.

so hopefully the power will stay on.

cause i'm staying inside for a while.

and if the power is on.. i can get my sew on!!!

late night wip wednesday

better late than never right?

i'm busy working on a new bake shop project for you...

which will be on the site this friday...

as long as i get this binding done tonight!

wip wednesday... improv blocks

bad news.

i was supposed to attend a meeting of the LA modern quilt guild monday night.

but it has been raining in LA

& while rain doesn't scare us in philly.

it scares everyone out here.. & the meeting was cancelled.

good news.

i got to hang out one on one w/ alissa {handmade by}

& chat up all things fabric.

after she left i was all into thinking about improv quilting...

since she is one of the best at it...

so i decided to have some fun.

i got a scrap bag of beach house fabrics

add in some strips of kona crush

and start making some blocks

i only had time to make 2.

but here they are on top of some linen i got at mood

so once i get home i'll make some more blocks & see where this thing goes.
