i quilted the top in light blue
the middle in navy
and the bottom in red

block 7
solid hexagon

i didn't use this block in for layout #1 {you'll see why}
and i used 4 of them in layout #2

follow the directions below to make a template that is the perfect size for your hexagons... as i've mentioned before hexagons will vary based on which ruler you use... and based off of your seam allowance!

you'll need a piece of paper to make a template from
{ or template plastic.. but i just used computer paper }
draw a straight line across the page.. about 6" down
and then draw a line up the left at a 60 degree angle as shown below

place a sewn 1/2 block on the lines like this
and mark where the top and right side are

you should end up with this...
check your angels and complete the lines.

cut out your 1/2 hexagon...
and add your 1/4" seam allowance on the bottom with a dashed line

take a fat quarter and fold it so that you can place your template as shown
if you are using 10" squares fold them in half
line up the fold with the dashed line... and cut the 3 sides.

the result will be a solid hexagon...
in a perfect size to fit with your blocks!!

block 6
Y knot!

i made 5 of these blocks for layout #1
and i didn't use this block in layout #2... but you can!

sew another 3 sets of strips together
and
follow the cutting instructions to make your pieced triangles

then take 6 from one strip.
and lay them out like this.

and then sew them together as we have been doing each week

here are some Y knots.. along with some floating hexagons and kaleidescope blocks

late to the party... my quilt for the festival

better late than never!

so i didn't want to just show you something for the festival that you have already seen...  so i went digging through old quilt photos... till i came upon one with a "story" worth telling.

my mom's teapot quilt
made in 2004-2005

you see my mom loves teapots.
and collects them...
and had been asking for a quilt...

so i went searching on google and found this image
{ i apologize that i don't know the source.. i found the image 5+ years ago }

but it wasn't the right colors for my mom...
and didn't showcase "her" teapots.

so i photographed a bunch of her teapots...
more than 15 of them.

one of the many i've given her...

gotta love the pepper!

my favorite set.
mrs. potts & chip... gotta love it!

and through the magic of photoshop i came up with this plan.

my mom likes batiks...
and when i found this one i knew it was perfect for her...

i also wanted the teapots to "pop"  so i added an extra 2 layers of batting on the back before i did a satin stitch around each teapot...  i then cut away the excess as shown below
then layer.. quilt.. and bind.

this was the 8th quilt i finished.. and i still had a lot to learn!
it isn't flat.. or square...
but my mom loves it.
and it hung in her kitchen for 4+ years
