Park Bench - Block of the Month

I'm very excited to announce today... Park Bench!!

Park Bench is a 9 month block of the month that will be available starting January 1st. If you are interested make sure to tell your local quilt shop now so they can order it!

This quilt features both the Hex N More and Sidekick Rulers!

Quilt Details
Fabric is Botanics by Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman
Pattern - Park Bench, JBQ 139
Designed by me
Quilted by Angela Walters
Started on 10/10/13
Finished on 10/22/13
Quilt measures - 65" x 88"

Here is the Back Cover
This block of the month also has its own hashtag! #ParkBenchQuilt

Take a walk in the Park! This Block of the Month features 8 unique blocks all created with the Sidekick & Hex N More Rulers. There are no pesky Y seams! Each month you'll create two blocks from the same design. Creative fabric placement will make your quilt appear to have 15 different blocks. (Month 8 = 1 Block) (Month 9 = Pieced Background)

This pattern will be printed in a larger format than my Quilt Patterns. It will be a full color 8 1/2" x 11" Book, just like Toes in the Sand. The Book will include directions on how to make all 8 blocks and assemble the Park Bench twin size quilt.

It was a marathon to get this quilt bound & photographed this week.

I got it done in record time for a twin... just over 3 hours!

Then it was off to shoot the cover. I am so thankful & blessed to have an amazing Fiancé. Lawrence gave up his lunch break to come help me photograph the cover. I couldn't have done it without him.

Here are some photos from our cover shoot.

Our first stop. The background was a bit dark, but you can really see Angela's quilting.

Location #2

Still wasn't what I was looking for...

...but did provide a nice setting for some detail photos.

I love how Angela used feathers in the background sections and more graphic designs in the actual blocks.

Finally we found the right spot!! Here I am arranging up the quilt.

Sometimes you need a stunt double.

...and then we got the right shot!! This is my "I'm so happy we got the shot, but so tired from all the binding" face!!

Park Bench will be available January 2014.

I'm currently at Quilt Market & excited to show off this quilt and all of my other quilts! Follow along with me on Instagram or Facebook. Once I'm home I will blog about the show!

Disco Quilt

This week I'm going to tell you a bit more about each of the new patterns I recently announced. Last up is Disco!

Disco uses the Hex N More and is a great quilt to show off fabrics that have high and low contrast.

Quilt Details
Fabric is Botanics by Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman
Pattern - Disco, JBQ 138
Designed by me
Quilted by Angela Walters
Started on 8/21/13
Finished on 9/9/13
Quilt measures - 60" x 80"

Here is the back of the pattern cover.
Each of my patterns now has its own hashtag! #DiscoQuilt

--

Disco is made with Fat Eighths. You can also use fat quarters and just buy half as many as listed on the back. I made the cover sample with this bundle of 31 fat quarters vs. the 60 fat eighths listed.

--
Here are some of the outtakes from our cover shoots. Disco was also photographed in Hawaii!

I liked the flowers in the background and the stone on the ground, but the quilt kept falling & just didn't look right.

Next we headed down to the beach...

...but we never quite found the perfect spot.

I had a good feeling about this tree. Lawrence held the quilt up while I did some test shots.

Then he ducked around behind the quilt to hold it in place without being seen.

I love this tree! Check out my tutorial on how to bind quilts with 120-degree angles to finish this quilt.

We had some wind issues for a minute...

...but then they calmed down.

 Peek a boo!

Disco will be available on 10/30.

Night Sky Quilt

This week I'm going to tell you a bit more about each of the new patterns I recently announced. Next up is Night Sky!

Night Sky is the first large quilt pattern that uses Sidekick!

Quilt Details
Fabric is Kona Solids by Robert Kaufman
Pattern - Night Sky, JBQ 137
Designed by me
Quilted by Angela Walters
Started on 6/24/13
Finished on 9/5/13
Quilt measures - 56" x 65"

The awesome team over at Robert Kaufman has put the 16 colors I used together into a Jaybird Night Sky Fat Quarter bundle!! I'm SO excited about them!!

FYI, they will have a limited number of them during Sample Spree at Quilt Market next week. I'm planning to pick one up and have a giveaway here once I'm back from Quilt Market.

Here is the back of the pattern cover.
Each of my patterns now has its own hashtag! #NightSkyQuilt

Fabric selection is key with Night Sky.

Create beautiful monochromatic stars with depth and detail using four shades from the same color family for each block. Four fat quarters will make six blocks.

Here are the colors that I used to create the cover quilt.

The baby quilt will have blocks in one color family only. The lap features four as shown on the cover. The twin has blocks in six color families, and the queen & king both have seven.

We checked in with the team at Robert Kaufman to identify specific Kona Cotton solids that complement the existing Jaybird Night Sky bundle if you want to make a larger sized Night Sky quilt. Here's what we came up with:
Grey color family: Silver, Shadow, Iron, Pewter
Pink color family: Pomegranate, Bright Pink, Candy Pink, Carnation
Yellow color family: Canary, Lemon, Sunny, Papaya

Here are some of the outtakes from our cover shoots. Lawrence & I also took night sky with us to Santa Barbara.

We tried to shoot the cover there... but never got the right shot.

This could have worked if the lighting wasn't so strong from behind the quilt.

I was actually holding the quilt this time! Check out my tutorial on how to bind quilts with 120-degree angles to finish this quilt.

I did get a nice photo that shows the detail of Angela's quilting. In the background of Night Sky, Angela quilted straight lines that crossed each other. Inside the quilt blocks, she quilted geometric quilting designs using the points of the block as a reference.

Since I didn't get the cover I wanted in Santa Barbara... I decided to bring the quilt to Hawaii!!

As soon as we discovered this bridge I knew the photo I wanted for the cover. Lawrence patiently held the quilt while I got the camera settings just right.

Got it!!

I think it is going to be hard find a more beautiful place to photograph my quilts!

Night Sky will be available on 10/30.

Day Break Quilt

This week I'm going to tell you a bit more about each of the new patterns I recently announced. First up is Day Break!

Day Break is the first pattern that uses the Hex N More and Sidekick Rulers together!

Quilt Details
Fabric is Artisan Batiks by Lunn Studios for Robert Kaufman
Pattern - Day Break, JBQ 136
Designed by me
Quilted by Angela Walters
Started on 6/30/13
Finished on 9/5/13
Quilt measures - 54" x 83"

Here is the back of the pattern cover. This is a Fat Quarter friendly quilt. You cut Jewels & Diamonds from each FQ.... So 15 Fat Quarters = 15 Blocks!!
Each of my patterns now has its own hashtag! #DayBreakQuilt

Here are some of the outtakes from our cover shoot. Lawrence & I headed up to Santa Barbara for a weekend recently and took the quilts along with us.

Too windy & need to fix the camera exposure... Check out my tutorial on how to bind quilts with 120-degree angles to finish this quilt.

Ok... I think we have it. Time for Lawrence to duck...

... and the moment he ducked the wind picked up again!

While the wind was still being a bit crazy I took a few photos that show off Angela's quilting.

Angela's work never ceases to amaze me. I love the detail she created with the quilting on Day Break. When quilting Daybreak, she quilting pebbles and straight lines in the background to create a secondary pattern. In each of the blocks, she used different quilting designs, including plume feathers and geometric quilting designs.

Eventually the wind calmed down enough for us to get the shot.

...and it was off to photograph the next one!

Day Break will be available on 10/30.
