Sweet Tooth Block 7 - Salt Water Taffy

My Sweet Tooth Block of the Month books are available now at local and online quilt shops! Since the book is out now, I wanted to share some inspiration for anyone looking to make a Sweet Tooth quilt.

Sweet Tooth can be made in twin or queen sizes. This quilt is made using my Hex N More and Super Sidekick rulers.

If you will be making your Sweet Tooth quilt from one of the Robert Kaufman Kona quilt kits (available now!), all of the strips in the roll up are in block order. Also, all of the Kona colors used in each block are noted in the Sweet Tooth book. This photo shows the fabrics that are in Roll 3. (The rolls are marked.)

To make Block 7, you'll use Kona PeacockKona ParrotKona WaterKona Malibu and Kona Wasabi:

You can sign up to participate in a Sweet Tooth block of the month program with a local quilt shop or guild (ask around if you're looking to join one!), order a Sweet Tooth quilt kit, or craft your own Sweet Tooth quilt with your favorite 2 1/2" strips!

I'm making a Sweet Tooth quilt using Tula Pink prints. Here are my Salt Water Taffy blocks in Tula Pink:

You can see the other Sweet Tooth blocks I made here:

Kits featuring the Kona Cotton solids I used to make the twin size quilt are available now. Kits include the Sweet Tooth book, 60 Kona Cotton 2 1/2" strips + all of the background and binding fabric to make the quilt.

If you're looking to order a Sweet Tooth quilt kit, they are available to order now from Hawthorne Threads and Fat Quarter Shop. You can also find the books now at Fat Quarter ShopHawthorne Threads, as well as other local and online quilt shops.

Tell us in the comments below: Are you sewing your Sweet Tooth quilt for yourself or as a gift for someone else?

The Latest Jaybird Quilts Pattern: Set Sail!

Meet my latest pattern, Set Sail! This quilt is all about diamonds and triangles that have fun together and make for great movement across the quilt top.

Quilt Details
Fabric is True Colors by Tula Pink
Pattern - Set Sail, JBQ 164
Designed by me
Quilted by Angela Walters
Started on 2/15/16
Finished on 3/14/16
Quilt measures - 61" x 75"

--

We took the quilt to Hawaii and battled the wind during our photo shoot.

Law really knows how to show off the pieced back and quilt labels during our photo shoots!
Set Sail is Fat Quarter Friendly. The lap size uses 18 Fat Quarters. Tula Pink's True Colors collection has 20 prints so I used everything except the black and the white. I decided to use the white for the setting so the black is the only print I didn't use in this quilt.

Angela Walters knocked the quilting out of the park... as usual!

---------------

Set Sail was inspired by the prints of diamonds, Track Flags, pictured below in green, cream & blue. It's part of Tula Pink's new collection called "Slow & Steady." This collection is her 20th and is being shown at Quilt Market this week. Slow & Steady will be available in stores in September. Tula and I worked together on the fabric placement & layout of this Slow & Steady Set Sail quilt.
Here is a Twin Size version of Set Sail in Slow and Steady. This quilt is made from Fat Quarters and the Twin size is perfect to show off all 25 in this collection!! (You may want more fabric if you would like to fussy cut.)

The twin quilt is so big that I needed Lawrence & my dad to help out for the photo shoot!

After our outdoor photo shoot I brought the quilt inside to get some more detail photos.
It looks so good on my bed that I might need to make the queen size now too!

It also looks great in my living room. Maybe I'll just need to make a Set Sail quilt for each room of my house!

Here are the True Colors Lap quilt and Slow & Steady Queen quilt hanging out together. After snapping this photo I really wanted to hop back into bed!

I love the pop of green binding on this quilt. It is a small scale hexagon that is a throw back to one of my favorite prints in Neptune. I have a feeling that I'll be buying an entire bolt of it!

Set Sail is made using my Super Sidekick ruler (click the link to the ruler to see the video tutorial on how to use it).

I also decided to whip up this Baby Size version using Kona Cottons.

Introducing the Jaybird Quilts Coloring Book!!!

The calming effects of quilts and coloring are together at last!

If you are a quilter, sewist or just a lover of color, these 25+ quilt designs will bring you the joys and comforts of snuggling up with a beloved quilt and coloring book. The pages are perforated and suitable for colored pencils, crayons, markers or gel pens.

I've gotten some requests over the years for line art of quilt tops to help people plan their fabric options. And then coloring books became all of the rage recently, so I figured, "Hey! Why not make a coloring book of quilt designs?!?"

My niece Aliyah tested out a few designs for me during the design process.

You can find a set of colored pencils similar to the ones Aliyah & I are using here

I wanted to make sure the paper was perfect so I tested out many options.

Here is some testing on the paper that I ended up choosing for the coloring book. It's thick and the designs are printed on one side. The only pen that I wouldn't recommend is a Sharpie. It's the only one that you can see from the other side.

I also designed the pages to be perforated. This way you can remove one for more detailed coloring or to frame & save.

When the coloring books arrived this week I got my crayons out and decided to color in Splash.

Check out that page perforation:

There's 25+ designs of the best of my quilts that made for great coloring pages, including some quilts from my book Skip the Borders. Coloring books will begin shipping to local quilt shops soon.

Share your coloring creations using the hashtag #JBQcolor on social media so we can share in the fun!

A New Jaybird Quilts Pattern: Trail Mix!

Meet Trail Mix! This is my spin on a traditional Snail's Trails quilt design using 60-degree triangles (and no Y seams!).

Finished on 3/19/16
Quilt measures - 56" x 72"

---

This was one of the easiest and fastest pattern cover photo shoots ever. We found this perfect wall to photograph the cover of the pattern. Luckily this one parking spot was open so I could get the right angle. It was the only open spot in the entire lot!
This photo really shows off Angela's quilting.

Here you can see the pieced backing I made with my quilt label.

Here's a detail shot of Angela's quilting in the smallest triangles in the quilt. Trail Mix is made using my Super Sidekick ruler (click the link to see a video tutorial of how to use the ruler) and there are no Y seams!

The Trail Mix pattern is printed in full color, includes templates and comes in 5 sizes (baby, lap, twin, full, queen). Here is the baby (right) and the lap (left) together.

This Trail Mix that I made from Angela's Fragmental fabric is a perfect match for my living room!

Here's the pieced back. I used up a bunch of leftover scraps from the front in my pieced label strip.

Here's a Trail Mix quilt in True Colors by Tula Pink. This quilt top was pieced by Leslie Meltzer and quilted by Teresa Silva.
