tonight is our next meeting of the philadelphia modern quilt guild
we will be having a potholder swap at the meeting tonight... and each member that wants to participate is making 2 potholders and bringing them wrapped up so that it's a surprise what you end up with!

i've had a month to work on mine... but surprise surprise i was working on them yesterday!
they feel very dharma initiative ish to me...

i still need to finish the binding on the one

also i finally got around to posting our logo on our blog..

exciting news...
mark & jodie from quilt out loud contacted me and asked if they could film a segment about the guild!!
of course!!
candi agreed to be filmed with me and we had a blast
thank you johanna for letting us film at cloth & bobbin!!
it'll be airing in september!

i also finished my siggy blocks over the weekend!

castle peeps new wave quilt

some fabric... you get it & you look at it for a while
afraid to cut into it... so it just sits on the shelf...
and then other fabric... just screams to be cut into

for me..
that was castle peeps
by lizzy house for andover

a few months back elizabeth @ oh fransson posted her new wave pattern
and i wanted to make it...
but no fabric yelled out to me {plus i didn't want to make the template}
then monica aka happy zombie made a smaller one with a dresden ruler
hmm i thought.
still i didn't make one..
i was inspired again...
{ it also didn't hurt that elizabeth posted this addition to the pattern }

so castle peeps + new wave = this!

blocks all on the floor... i decided on a "color wave"

it's amazing how much length you loose one the seams are sewn

and like that i was done!

close up of the quilt... since my toes aren't that exciting

most of my seams line up

a few didn't.. but not enough to take them out

oh... and i didn't have the "fat cats" ruler by Darlene Zimmerman..
but i do have her 30 degree triangle ruler..
and that's what i used to make my quilt...
it's a bit more of an angle... but i like it!

Jorie!

Jorie said...

My favorite fabrics on sale at Piece N quilt would have to be ALL of the "Half Moon" line! The hubby wants me to make him a black, white, and wonky quilt (so it won't be too girly!) that he can take with him when he has to go away overnight for the Army.

hexagon quilt along... finishing directions

jaybirdquilts
The Hexagon Quilt-A-Long Posts
flickr pool block 1 & layouts   block 5
supply list & faq block 2 block 6
button & participants   block 3 block 7
cutting instructions block 4 finishing directions

finishing directions!
 { the hexagon quilt a long is over... but you can always look at the tutorials & make a hexagon quilt! }

General Hexagon Sewing Tips

1. Line up triangles and sew an accurate 1/4"

2. Press seams open when sewing units together

3. Pin!  I'm not usually a big on pinning... but it really helps when working with the bias and this many seams.  Also I suggest you don't cut off the "dog ears" along the way as they will actually help you line up pieces.

4. Don't obsess!  Many of my seams within blocks aren't perfect... but often you can't tell because the same fabric is meeting up with itself.  I focus on seams where blocks meet & there is a lot of contrast.

 Quilt Layout #1
details
fabric is wonderland by momo for moda & bella solids
designed by me
will be quilted by me
started on 3/29/10
top done on 4/28/10
finished on ...
measures - 40.5" w x 51.5" h

blocks needed for layout #1

1. I started by laying out all my blocks.  I considered adding white at the top and bottom... to make the quilt have 4 straight sides... but eventually decided against it.  But you can do this if you like.  {See top left of photo below}

2. In addition to the 32 blocks you'll need 6 "fillers" for the sides.  They can be made by cutting two 4.5" strips x WOF of your solid.  Then subcut these strips using the template from block 7.

3.  You'll be sewing the quilt together in vertical columns.

4. I suggest sewing one column at a time so that you don't mix up your pieces.  This layout will have 10 columns.

5. Continue sewing until you have all 10 columns together.

6. Then begin to sew the columns together.  Continue until you have the entire quilt top done.

Quilt Layout #2
details
fabric is remix by ann kelle for robert kaufman & quilter's linen
pattern - hexagon quilt a long
designed by me
will be quilted by me
started on 5/28/10
top done on 6/8/10
finished on ...
measures - 40.5" w x 45.5" h  {22.75" per side}

blocks needed for layout #2

1. Again I started by laying out all my blocks.  I decided on having the final shape of my layout to be one giant hexagon.

2. In addition to the 19 blocks you'll need 36 "fillers" for the setting.  They can be made by cutting three 4.5" strips x WOF of your solid.  Then subcut these strips using your ruler as shown below.

3. You'll be sewing the quilt together in vertical columns similarly to layout #1.

4. Start with one column.  Make sure that this column does not have a solid hexagon block in it.  {you'll see why}

5. Repeat for the next column.

6. Sew the 2 columns together.

7.  Things are a bit different when sewing columns with solid hexagon blocks.  You'll be working with 2 columns at a time as shown below.  Attach the setting triangles to the hexagon blocks as shown.

8.  You should end up with four units as shown below.

9. Sew these units together to finish a wide column of hexagons.

10. Continue this until you have 5 wide columns put together.

11. Sew these columns together to finish your quilt top!

the options really are endless!
don't forget as you finish your blocks.. and your quilts...
to please post photos in the quilt a long flickr pool
and in the jaybirdquilts flickr pool

thanks for joining me on this hexagon journey!!!
