On Tuesday I taught a bunch of brownie scouts how to make pillowcases. This counts as one part of helping them on their way to earning sewing badges. Back in the day I was a girl scout so this was lots of fun for me! Thank you to Robert Kaufman fabrics for donating Girl Scout fabric for us to use.
We used the Roll It Up free pattern from American Patchwork & Quilting
{I cut all of the fabric ahead of time}

Awesome! My son is a tiger scout and it will be shameful if I do not help with the sewing badge. He's done a pillowcase and he made his first quilt this week but apparently that is not good enough. They want the menfolk to learn how to put a button on. I guess they feel that is a better skill for men to have? A button ain't gonna keep you warm at night or make your pillow cute, though!

Good for you, Julie. I did a sewing badge with my daughter's girl scout troop many many moons ago. I always wonder if any of those girls still sew!

How awesome! I was thinking of doing something simular with my daughter's troop. I mean teaching the basics and letting them behind a machine. It would be so cool. But I have not asked yet! lol!I am glad that you got a chance to open a door for those girls. Who knows you might have gotten a few avid sewers out of there.

As a former Girl Scout Troop leader and a still active volunteer, I want to thank you. I would have loved your help with one of my troops!
If you want a group of girls to take a good picture take the silly picture first. Have them all act really goofy and take the shot. Then tell them it's time for the real picture and 9 times out of 10 they will pose beautifully for you because they already had a chance to be silly.

Awwwwww how adorable are they! I bet you had a blast teaching them. I bet you were tired running around the room helping them when you were done but gosh, they all probably has so much fun too. I'm sure it was well worth all the work. They're like little sponges at that age.

How fun! I too have done the sewing badge for girl scouts. I did a drawstring bag, but I think pillowcases is a much better project. The girls don't use drawstring bags much. Nice!
