Three in a Box

By popular request I have decided to publish my Three in a Box design as a pattern. This design originally appeared in Fons & Porter magazine back in 2010.

One of the requests that came as a result of my Size Options post was Block Size Options. With this pattern I decided to give it a try! If it is received well I'll look at putting that option in more often. The pattern includes complete directions for 4 different size quilts as well as 4 different size blocks.

Not finished yet!
Quilt measures - 46" x 46"

Here are the Youth & Lap together so you can see the size difference in the blocks. The youth has 18" blocks and the lap has 12" ones.

I had the Three in a Box quilts with me the same day I took the Ballerina Pattern cover. Once I spread them on the ground Aliyah came over and sat down. She gave me the "This is what you wanted right?" look and I just started cracking up.

She got bored after a few minutes and went to play somewhere.

It was quite entertaining to say the least!!

While I really liked my original sample, I have to say I LOVE the new one. The large 18" blocks really feature the design well. Also I arranged the blocks in a different layout. The pattern includes 3 different setting suggestions. You can really personalize your quilt!!

I need your help to finish the 3rd sample. It doesn't have binding yet.

I have 6 options and would love to know what you would do.
Choice 1 - Blue with star design
Choice 2 - Purple zig zag dot print

Choice 3 - Pink zig zag dot print
Choice 4 - Purple bias cut stripe

Choice 5 - Light colored print with white, blue & green
Choice 6 - Green print

This is the back in case you were wondering. It is the same purple as option #2.

So which one would you use? Let me know!!

On a side note
I have not forgotten about the 3 giveaways. I will pick the winners asap. I've just been swamped with sewing, packing patterns & getting ready for market. Thank you for understanding!

Choice 2 - Purple zig zag dot print
Emphasizes the quilt in a nice way.

  5. Option 4 - purple bias cut stripe. I love the darker edges to hold all the adorable bright color in!

  6. I just love this pattern too Julie. Definitely will need to buy this one too.

I really like either Choice 2 or Choice 3. Given my love of purple I was drawn to Choice 2 right away even before seeing the backing you've used. I still like it but then wondered if using Choice 3 might give more distinction on the back from the binding to the backing so that was why Choice 2 was chosen too.

  7. I dig the green - it really helps pick up the border print - and green and purple are FABULOUS together! :)
I will also be picking up this pattern, it's fabulous!

  8. Option 2 - purple zig zag
I feel it provides a wrap around continuity with the backing

  9. I prefer either of the purple options. I like the color contrast. The pink would be my next choice.

  10. Great pattern Julie - and how nice to have all the options included!
I like the purple zig zag for a finish!

  11. I like the blue w/the stars. A nice contrast to the background. Did I notice that Brad lost weight? He looks terrific!

  13. Considering just the front, I would use one of the purples because it pops off the front. However, if I consider the back as well, I would go with the pink because it pops of the back and does not completely hide on the front.

  14. What a lovely and light pattern!
I can only say: Go for #6, the green binding: it enhances your outer border, plays nicley with the blocks on the back, and blue and purple always liven up when green comes around ;)

  15. 4 because it picks up the colors from he town border print so well :)

Or 2 to match the back- I'm liking that idea more and more these days.

  16. I love the pattern, actually I love all your new patterns and the size options are great. I really love the one block cot quilt. I would bind it in the first option, the blue with stars.

  28. I love your pattern!!! I can't wait to order the pattern.
As for the binding choices, I think the purple zigzag allows the border to stand out best.
    Cheers!

  29. Choose 3, it is the fabric you used in the center of the block. It makes the houses pop out. Love this pattern and the new way you arrange it.

  30. I say the pink zig zag :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Definitely the green. Makes it pop but doesn't detract from the rest of the fabrics/design.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like #1 the best, and then #5.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Love the pattern. I think I like blue with star. This pattern would do well for my grand who wants a hot pink/lime green with a little white quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would use the pink zig zag that you used in the middle. It makes it all pop and blend together at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like the green... it will frame the quilt nicely. I think I would definitely stick with something that is a contrast to the border in the same way the block is a contrast to the background.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I personally like option #6 - the green fabric. I think that it would make the block pop. Can't wait to see the baby quilt with binding and to see which option you chose.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like the pink zig zag dot. I think it would make it pop.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The green shakes it up, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would use choice 1, the blue with star design. Love this pattern! All the options you've included give us tons of quilt design ideas. Thanks!

  40. I like option 2 - the purple zig zag dot.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was afraid green was being voted out, but you got quite a few in the end! I just love the way it contrasts but doesn't detract. :)

  42. I really like the pink zigzag for the binding (choice3)! Really sets off the center of the block! Now I'll read what the others have said about their choices.

  43. I would use the pink ZigZag print. Its seems like the right color I would have picked for binding.
