It has been an exciting (& crazy busy) few weeks over here!!
I've got a few things to share with you today. :-)

I'm having a Book Signing & Release Party this weekend at Sew Modern in Los Angeles. It is from Noon to 2PM on Sunday, August 12th.
We will be having giveaways & I'll also be doing demos of my new Hex N More ruler! Here is a sneak peek at some of the giveaways!
A Quilt Kit to make Stars & Stripes - Including a copy of my book, Skip the Borders.
A Quilt Kit to make Northern Lights - Including the pattern & Hex N More ruler!
Don't worry... I'll also be doing giveaways here on my blog next week for those of you not in the Los Angeles area.

I have been working on updating my Where to Buy page. If you know a shop that stocks my products & is not listed... please let me know!
--
The Hex N More rulers & new patterns have arrived!!
I unpacked the boxes and have been shipping them out to shops. If you would like to get a ruler or the new patterns you can check out my Where to Buy page or ask your local quilt shop to order them. Many shops have ordered my patterns because dedicated Jaybird Quilts Blog Readers asked for them... and I really appreciate the support!!!
If you placed a pre-order in my shop.... I had about 20 books that I was able to ship on Monday. I'm waiting for more books to arrive & have been stalking the UPS truck. As soon as they arrive I'll sign them and get them out to you. You will receive an e-mail confirmation with tracking once your book is shipped.
I posted this collage to Instagram a few days ago. It shows my green binder that holds everything I used and scribbled on during the development of the book. The second photo shows me holding my final proofs before I signed off on them & then waited patiently for the months to pass. All the hours spent sewing & developing my manuscript were worth it. Now comes the time for you to read it... Enjoy it... And learn from it. Thank you so much to every single teacher, quilter, friend & family member that has supported me along the way.
Today I'm featured over at Martingale's Blog - Stitch This.
In the opening paragraph Jenny asks... Is it possible to be a modern quilter and a traditional quilter at the same time?
At the end of the paragraph she says... Julie has one foot firmly planted in the modern-quilt community. But the other foot is clearly in traditional quilt design.

i think modern and traditional often go hand in hand. look at any vintage quilt book and you will have do make sure you aren't looking at at modern quilting book!
ReplyDeleteI think it's more than possible to be both. A lot of modern quilts start off with a traditional type of block-look at how the log cabin has been modernized.
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely possible to have a foot planted in traditional and modern It's kind of the tweaking of the old to create new.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in the distinction. Thomas knauer's blog has some good recent posts about that topic. Sometimes I feel like modern is more of a taste or preference rather than a set style.
ReplyDeleteWow- wish I lived out there! I have already ordered book rulers & a couple new patterns! Can't wait.
ReplyDeleteExciting, will add the book to my "want it list". I think a foot in each. ;)
ReplyDeleteGood to hear you will have a giveaway next week for those of us not in the LA area. I was getting just a little MORE bummed that I live here in this heat..
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on all your hard work. I think your feet are firmly planted between all forms - thanks for inspiring us.
ReplyDeleteI do see you as a free creative individual not bound but soaring outside of the box embracing elements that enhance your creative expression.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the celebration of your newly released book!

I think you can be both...you have clearly proven that! Congrats on the book!!
ReplyDeleteHi Julie- I bought Dot Party at Boersma's Sewing Center in McMinnville, Oregon. I'm pretty sure they stock more of your patterns.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think it's possible to be a bit modern & a bit traditional. I know that my quilting style is always changing & evolving. Congrats on the book & the ruler, both look amazing!
ReplyDeleteYes! It's definitely possible to be both modern and traditional. Some of my favorite designs are traditional blocks made out of proportion...tiny, tiny versions (which I have no intention of making!) or an entire quilt made of an enlarged traditional design.
ReplyDeleteI love your work. Thanks for the inspiration and good luck with your new book.
Yes, I think it is possible! I also think you are great at it! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI have quilted for 35 years and never did quite get the "traditional thing", but I love all quilts. I think the 'Modern Quilt" is a breath of new life into quilting. I make both.
ReplyDeleteFunny you should ask. The other day I mentioned to my SIL, not a quilter, that I was waiting for your book. She asked why I like you. I told her it's because you're modern and traditional at the same time, just the right mix of both. Can't wait for your book to arrive!
ReplyDeleteJulie I am rather a traditional quilter yet because you are both you are helping me grow my ideas & skills for quilting, good, yes? I pre-ordered your book early early because the title verified my thoughts that not all quilts need a border yet your book is the first to address this idea. Your book is wonderful ~ new refreshing quilt designs, complete easy to understand directions w/ illustrations & pics & of course, the bonus of seeing your natural abilities of wonderful fabric & color selections w/ pictures of the quilts you designed and made for your book "Skip the Borders."
ReplyDeleteSO GLAD that I was one of the lucky 20 that got their book this week. I love it and can hardly wait to get started on a quilt from the book, now to pick which one. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Julie! How exciting. Your new ruler looks as great as your book. And yes, modern and traditional go well together ;) I have one foot in both worlds too.
ReplyDeleteJulie, congratulations! You are an example of hard work = success. You deserve every bit of it!! Looking forward to seeing you at one of your book signings here on the East Coast!
ReplyDeleteSO sad to be on the other coast!!! I know it will be a great success - enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your new book and ruler! Yes, you can be both Modern and traditional. It is a matter of interpretation and perspective.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I think I have said it so many times, your work is a wonderful blend of modern and traditional, always grounded in a strong design aesthetic which sets you apart from many modern quilters....and a dash of whimsey thrown in!
ReplyDeleteLauren and the staff at Sew Modern are the greatest. I've seen your quilts in their shop (A-MAZ-ING) and look forward to meeting you in person on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteYEAH
Julie, you can do and be whatever you want! Mix it up, just for the fun of it (tradional and modern that is). Congratulations on your new book! And the new ruler, too!
