I love some interest on the back! I recently did a quilt that called for a layer cake. I couldn't find one I liked so I bought fat quarters. There was enough material left over from that to patch the entire back in a brick pattern. Now the back is interesting as well as the front.
I've been thinking about doing a reversible quilt - with my main quilt on the front, and then using the leftover to do a quilt on the back in a simple pattern. I didn't want to make 2 quilts with the same fabric, but I love the fabric and have a few colorways and thought it would be a good use.
I piece my backs about 95% of the time and have been for about 20 years. I like to have the back be just as fun as the front, even if it isn't totally reversable. If i choose fun back fabric it is usually one of the more expensive fabrics. So, I will center it in the back and do borders all around or if yardage/size of quilt works that I can just do a top and/or bottom border...then, I do that.
I like to piece backs. Sometimes they are a compliment to the front, sometimes a centered or off centered strip, sometimes 10" blocks of stash, or a use of some orphan blocks. I, also, like to put my label into the mix of piecing - that way it is stable and non-removable.
I love the way pieced backs look, but I haven't attempted one yet. I've only been quilting about 2 years. First I started out making terrible (really terrible) bindings. Then I tried using the backing to fold over the top to make a faux binding--something I could handle. Then I found this blog and the perfect binding tutorial. I was kind of embarassed that you were describing my bindings when you said you've seen some that were a "hot mess." Anyway, my bindings have greatly improved, although they are not always perfect. So, my skills are probably up to the level to try the pieced backing. I have 3 quilts in the works and I only ordered 1 yard of backing fabric for each. I plan to piece the rest, so wish me luck! I think the pieced back looks cool, plus we have a couple vintage quilts my husband's grandmother made and several have pieced backs. It makes sense if you want to be frugal.
I often piece the back. I really love that you incorporate your label in to the piecing. I'm terrible about labeling, but that photo makes me want to start!
I usually piece the back but I don't have cool labels ready to go so I'm not so good about getting a label on. I looked at the Spoonflower options but then I'd need a logo. And if I could figure out a logo/name I might have a blog...lol.

usually i piece my quilt backings, too, sometimes i find a very wide fabric which fits as a whole piece - most european fabrics came in a 55" width wich sometimes fits.
i love that green/blue/white backing!! what´s that print, can you tell me please?
I love pieced backs. It adds so much interest to the whole theme of the quilt. I like to think of the back as I'm doing the front. You reminded me that I don't usually take pictures of the backs so I'll have to do that. Cristina
