wip wednesday... rural jardins

i fell for rachel's scruffily quilt right away
how could you not?
it probably didn't help that it was in hushabye
and we all know how i feel about tula pink...

well since i just finished this top a few days ago...

i decided i needed to start my scruffily quilt
so what fabric?
then it all came to me...
rural jardins print layer cake
+
rural jardins woven FQ budle
+
rouenneries scraps
=
heaven

{ all french general by moda }

i started hacking into my brand new fabric

and this is what i have so far...
{ sorry for the late night.. low lighting.. bad angle.. quilt is too big to layout anywhere else photo.... }

so the question is.
what size?
rachel's was 6 blocks by 6 blocks which is about 57" square
i'm thinking 7x9??
or 8x8??
any suggestions...

  3. Pretty quilt Julie, I would do the 7x9 because everyone in my family is tall! But for us average height people 8x8 would be great! So I guess I am saying to make it the right size for whomever will be lucky enough to snuggle under it!

  4. I like the 8x8 size - it lends to the square blocks. And it's big enough to cuddle under :) I like to be able to wrap myself in like a cocoon and this size would do it! Very pretty - it almost looks nautical?! Nice job once again!

  5. I vote 8x8 too.
I just did that same quilt for my son. I laid his out 5x7 but that's for a 7 year old. ☺

  9. I vote for 8x8 too. Your fabric choice is fab. Going to be a favorite quilt, I'm sure.

  10. 8x8 would give you a very nice snuggly throw! Big enough for two or one full cocooned.

  11. My 7x8 after washing and drying measures 66x72. I like 7x8 or 8x9, I seem to be in the minority, but I like rectangular quilts. I love your fabric choice!!

  12. another 8X8 vote...

    and I love this!

I have been eyeing the woven FQ bundle since it was released (I already have a layer cake)... but I didn't know what to do with it. Perhaps I do now. :)

  15. I am so in love with the French General fabrics, they are all too gorgeous. I love what you did with the fabric! I would do a 7x9 layout, it’ll be nice and long that way, perfect for the couch or a twin bed. I was up sewing late the other night too, we should be neighbors, we could sew all night, it’d be fun :D

  16. I've done several of these for gifts. I kept them at 5x6 and they're perfect for naps, or casual throws. My hubs LOVES his, in Authentic.

  17. well let me cast my vote then...
    i'd go 8x8.
course i'd addicted to square quilts.
like it pains me to even think about making a rectangle quilt.

  18. WoW!! Love your quilt!! Rachel's scruffily quilt was the quilt to inspire me to start quilting last fall. I used Glaze by 3 sisters for mine hoping to finish by Christmas, but no. I got it done in January. It was so funny to see this post because I have mine laying in the floor in front of me. I just got done ordering the backing fabric. I will be taking it to the quilter next week. Oh, I can't wait to see my first quilt finished!! Yours too!! I made mine just the way it says in her recipe. I am just going to use it for a throw. Sorry such a long comment.

  22. I am a huge fan of the scruffily quilt . . . it was the first quilt I ever made! Mine is 6x7, but I really wish it was longer. I vote for 7x9. For me (at 5'5") I think that would be the perfect fit to cover my feet AND tuck under my chin - very important for quality TV watching :-)

  31. No kidding, just today on the way home from work, I was thinking about the version of this quilt I am going to make with my Make Life layer cake. I have 42 squares which would make it 6x7 at the most. I am considering adding larger borders to make it bigger. Since you can quilt it yourself on your frame--go for a larger size!
