so as i announced...
 i'll be hosting a hexagon quilt a long
in connection with

 { fyi...you can join the hexagon quilt a long at any time }

{ my pillow for the pillow talk swap }
so are you in??
you should join us!!
sign up in the flickr pool.. and leave me a comment too!

i've had a bunch of e-mails asking questions.
so here are the answers to a few...

supplies.
a jelly roll.. or a whole bunch of 2 1/2" x WOF strips.
a layer cake or a bunch of fat quarters... i'd say 8 or so FQ will work
a solid that contrasts with your fabric... i don't have exact yardage yet... but you'll probably need around 1-2 yards depending on how bit you want your quilt to be.
fabric is nest
by tula pink
{ & is just for show... this is what i'm using... }

when?
we'll be starting in about 2 weeks or so.
there is going to be more than one block...
and we will be doing 1 or 2 blocks a week.

questions?
this post will also serve as a place to ask questions.
& i'll update it as often as i can.

so start asking!

okay, I forgot to ask... what is WOF? I'm new to quilting and some of the terms. Thanks for helping me out.
WOF = width of fabric
here is a list of common terms

will this be easy enough for a beginner?
this is probably considered a bit above a beginner level project... but i'll be posting lots of photos... and i'll be here every step of the way to answer questions!

Are there large focal areas of the blocks, or are small scale prints better? (I'm totally using this to justify shopping)
both!  for the parts made with jelly roll strips... you'll end up with small pieces.. but the areas that will use the layer cake or fat quarters will be big enough areas to focus on large prints if you want!

do I have to join the flicker group to join in?
you don't have to... but it is lots of fun to see what everyone is making!

Jelly roll and layer cake of same fabric line is best? For someone without much of a stash and no idea how these get used. Could solids work for FQs?
can be.. but doesn't have to be! and yes solids could work for FQs... you'll need the jelly roll first.. so if you want to get that part & then wait to get the rest of your fabric as the quilt comes along that will work too!

There's a line I want to use that doesn't have a Jelly Roll. Any guesses how much I'll need? The fat quarter set comes with 21 fat quarters. I'll need 8 for the "layer cake" portion. Will 13 fat quarters equal what I would get from a jelly roll?
very cute fabric!  how much you'll need depends on how big you want to go... but it will be a lot easier to have fabric that is the full WOF {aprx 42"} and not the 21" of a FQ.  You could order 1/4" yard cuts of the fabric you like... 13 or so should be enough.. and then you can use the other 8 for the 2nd part of the quilt.

Okay, question: are there special quilting tools or templates you use with a hexagon quilt?!
yes.  see rulers below.
and we will be making a template too.  you'll be able to make it from paper or you can get template plastic if you'd like.

Is there a special ruler we will be using?
ruler options

my #1 suggestion.
60 Degree Double-Strip Ruler by Creative Grids

other options

60° Triangle 8in Ruler by Creative Grids

Equilateral Triangle Rulers by American Jane

i'll also show you how to work with a standard 6 x 24 ruler
and some of the others shown below...
but getting a 60 degree ruler will help... trust me!

I am really excited about this quilt. I always wanted to learn how to make hexagons. I have a question though. Where does the contrasting fabric go? I couldn't picture it from your Neptune pillow. I have Neptune jelly roll, if I can find a layer cake, that will be my fabric choice. Thanks for leading this quit along.
the pattern is a variation of my pillow... soon enough you'll see where all the fabric goes... as long as you have the jelly roll you'll have enough to get started!

    Thanks doll!

    It wasn't that hard really :)
    Can't wait to get started.

  50. Well, I think that this will be one that I join in as well. Yikes, I better get some good sewing time in to finish up some other stuff on the go!! Oh this is exciting, hexagon quilts fascinate me! Thank you for doing this :)

  53. Just curious about how many 2.5 WOF strips do we need?? I have a collection I would like to use, but not sure how many of each print to cut. If you could let me know that would be fantastic!!

    Thank you so much!

    ReplyDelete
  54. What will be the finished size of the quilt?

    ReplyDelete
  55. a quick question--you state the 60 degree double-strip ruler by creative grids but link to the 45 degree at IHAN. I almost bought the wrong one!

    ReplyDelete
  56. ok, you talked me into it! can't wait to get started - just need to choose which fabric from my little stash to use!

    ReplyDelete
  57. This may sound like a really silly question, but I can't find an easy answer and you were the logical person to ask. Is there a place online that I can look at the Moda collections and see what different prints are included in a package? I like the idea of a simple jelly roll and layer cake purchase and having the fabric shopping completed, but I want to love *all* the fabrics included (I mean, for the most part--I'm realistic!), but I'm having trouble finding someplace, anyplace, that shows them all! Any suggestions? Thank you! :)

  63. I'm in, and so excited about it. I've been quilting for several years, but never a quilt-a-long. Still debating fabric (might be a good time for a stash challenge), but that's part of the fun.

  65. Julie, I'm curious to know what you're using for your contrasting solid. I'm trying to decide what color I want, but maybe I should just wait for the instructions to see what we're doing with it...

    ReplyDelete
  66. I have a jelly roll of Kona Brights (solids) and a Bali Pops pack. Will either solids or batiks work for this quilt or shall i (heaven forbid!) go shopping for more fabric?

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm in. But I'm playing with my fat quarter stash. I cut a 5 in. strip, sew 1/4" on either side of center, cut down the middle and end up with two strips able to make 8 triangles.

    ReplyDelete
  68. this sounds awesome! I'm in! I will use my 2-1/2 strips from our strip swap at quilt guild! Fun, Fun!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I love this idea! I have just started quilting and will be making a baby quilt. thanks for the lovely pics and instructions. Looking forward to the next step!
