i've had a bunch of e-mails asking questions.

so here are the answers to a few...

supplies.

a jelly roll.. or a whole bunch of 2 1/2" x WOF strips.

a layer cake or a bunch of fat quarters... i'd say 8 or so FQ will work

a solid that contrasts with your fabric... i don't have exact yardage yet... but you'll probably need around 1-2 yards depending on how bit you want your quilt to be.

okay, I forgot to ask... what is WOF? I'm new to quilting and some of the terms. Thanks for helping me out.
WOF = width of fabric

will this be easy enough for a beginner?
this is probably considered a bit above a beginner level project... but i'll be posting lots of photos... and i'll be here every step of the way to answer questions!


Are there large focal areas of the blocks, or are small scale prints better? (I'm totally using this to justify shopping)
both!  for the parts made with jelly roll strips... you'll end up with small pieces.. but the areas that will use the layer cake or fat quarters will be big enough areas to focus on large prints if you want!


do I have to join the flicker group to join in?
you don't have to... but it is lots of fun to see what everyone is making!


Jelly roll and layer cake of same fabric line is best? For someone without much of a stash and no idea how these get used. Could solids work for FQs? 
can be.. but doesn't have to be! and yes solids could work for FQs... you'll need the jelly roll first.. so if you want to get that part & then wait to get the rest of your fabric as the quilt comes along that will work too!


There's a line I want to use that doesn't have a Jelly Roll. Any guesses how much I'll need? The fat quarter set comes with 21 fat quarters. I'll need 8 for the "layer cake" portion. Will 13 fat quarters equal what I would get from a jelly roll?
very cute fabric!  how much you'll need depends on how big you want to go... but it will be a lot easier to have fabric that is the full WOF {aprx 42"} and not the 21" of a FQ.  You could order 1/4" yard cuts of the fabric you like... 13 or so should be enough.. and then you can use the other 8 for the 2nd part of the quilt.


Okay, question: are there special quilting tools or templates you use with a hexagon quilt?!
yes.  see rulers below.
and we will be making a template too.  you'll be able to make it from paper or you can get template plastic if you'd like.



Is there a special ruler we will be using?

I am really excited about this quilt. I always wanted to learn how to make hexagons. I have a question though. Where does the contrasting fabric go? I couldn't picture it from your Neptune pillow. I have Neptune jelly roll, if I can find a layer cake, that will be my fabric choice. Thanks for leading this quit along.
the pattern is a variation of my pillow... soon enough you'll see where all the fabric goes... as long as you have the jelly roll you'll have enough to get started!
